So I have a question. Can you take the 4W drive parts from a 1995-2004 pre runer and put them in a 98 2W drive Tacoma or dose it specifically need to be a 4W drive Tacoma to 2W drive Tacoma

What 4wd parts are you talking about when it's a prerunner?

Okay I probably should have been a little more specific on what I'm doing. I'm wanting to convert my 2W drive 1998 Tacoma to a four-wheel drive. But I was wondering what other 4W drive models I could pull parts out of to put into my Tacoma

If it's a 6lug prerunner, the swap will be all bolt on.

It's easiest is to run manual locking hub/clamshell/tube from a pre00 and look for a manual j pattern tcase. You'll need front and rear driveshaft or get your rear shorten and have a shop build you the front.

    Easy money.....

    Keep in mind
    2wd was 4wd
    4wd want solid axle

If the tacoma you're referring to is the one in your picture, it's look like a 5 lug. If it's a 5 lug, you won't be able to swap. Frame and suspension are completely different between the 6lug and 5lug

Drop in swap, definitely not but anything is possible with $$$.

Easier to just buy a 4wd

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
It could be done but it would be a real project.

    lots of welding and fabrication.

In essence your Cab and bed on a 4x4 custom built drive train for the most.$$$$$$$$$ Even if your able to do all the work yourself.

Far cheaper to just buy a 4x4

EDIT: lol, just realized you have a 5 lug. NVM. Leaving anyway for search to pick up.

Below 4WD Conversion info is only for 6 lug tacomas and is assuming you want to convert to non-ADD aka manual hubs...

    TRANSMISSIONS:

You can pull a transmission up to 2002. 2003-04 removed the kickdown/throttle cable so stay away from those unless you are 2003-2004, then those are the only years you want. 4Runner transmissions will work too but you'll need to pull your Park/Neutral safety switch off the PreRunner transmission as the PN safety switch on the 4Runner uses a different connector. All the other sensors are the same. I have a 1999 A340F out of a 4Runner Limited model. Also keep in mind, because of the added length with the transfer case attached, you'll need to extend your speedo sensor wires/connector *see additional under my note on transfer cases*.

    TRANSFER CASES:
Need to be specific. You'll want a J shift case from a 95-2000 (I believe). Its going to be listed as a w/o (without) 2-4 selector 4WD.

You can also look at the following (if my 1995 Tacoma transfer case doesn't last, I'll be looking at the FJ):
FJ CRUISER 2007-2014 AT or 4 RUNNER 2010-2018
NOTE: They MUST specify part time 4WD/manual shift (These years had Jshift VF2A transfer cases... same thing as the w/o 2-4 selector jshift cases in the tacoma).

NOTE: If the transfer case has a mechanical speed sensor, you'll need this so your electronic speedo can talk to the mechanical speed sensor. https://lowrangeoffroad.com/speedometer-adapter-mechanical-to-electrical-vss.html

    FRONT DIFFERENTIAL:
Whatever you can find I guess. Just MAKE SURE it matches the gear ratio of your rear differential. VERY IMPORTANT. You can pull the drain plug on the front diff candidate and count the teeth to verify ratio. If it's an ADD front diff (one with an actuator) you can pull it, lock it with a worm gear clamp and button it back up. Or the other option is to locate a manual diff tube and pull the ADD tube w/actuator and replace it. I have a transfer case out of a 2002 4Runner which I swapped the tubes/shafts.

    REAR DRIVESHAFT:
For the rear driveshaft, that's on you dude. Either shorten yours down to fit or look for a used one. Hard to find. See my post here which will tell you the years to look for... -

    Steering Knuckles (aka spindles):
You can re-use yours, you can look for salvaged 4WD ones - you have options here.

See my other post here for additional links, resources, etc. Good luck, don't give up - you can do it.

There are lots of people who want exactly what you have if you sell it, no use trying to turn it into something it's not.
