Honestly, since we can't easy it in with a stick, it seems to engage / disengage smoother while rolling. At a stop, I hear and feel more clunking and strain. But then, it could just be that I hear more since I ain't moving?

I've had the second stick several times. I've had the manual hubs many times. Trust me, the dial is about one million percent better and easier. No vice grips in cold weather is worth any issues with solenoids.

It seems to some people that, the older shit gets, the better it was. Not true for those of us that were around back then. Manual hubs? Yeah right. Let me know how those work when we have a cold snap like we just had. No matter what, manual hubs sucked. Disco music sucked.

Some things were meant to suck forever. Again, disco and manual hubs. And shag carpets.

I don't want to be pendantic (aka James May), but this brings back fond memories:

Every time I see one of these threads I want to ask, WHY? I can't think of a single reason why anyone would need to be driving over 20-25 mph in 4X4. If it is safe to drive over 30 mph you certainly don't need 4X4. At 50+ it is causing more problems than it is solving. 4X4 ain't AWD, which works just fine at faster speeds.

    Manual Locking hubs.

Given the option I'd take them every time. Much more rugged and reliable and not a disadvantage at all. If there is even a remote chance of needing 4X4 lock em. Then shift in and out of 4X4 as needed. It won't hurt a thing to run on the road with them locked as long as you're not in 4X4.

    Two things:
Friday night at around 11 pm I was heading home. 312 mile drive. I got into the mountains and the last 90 miles the interstate was snow covered and I pretty much was the only one out there, with the exception of the plows. I was going between 50-60 mph, in 4WD. Nobody around, fairly straight, lots of hills. No problems. I could have left it in 2WD sure, but why? Much more sure footed in 4WD, especially any slushy areas.

You apparently have never had manual hubs in zero or below zero conditions. Trying to turn them is pretty much impossible, hence the vice grip comment. Absolutely they are simple, I give you that. But more rugged and dependable? Um, no. Back in the day when most 4WD vehicles had them they had their problems, just like everything else. Truly how often do the solenoid operated units fail? Very seldom is the answer.

I bet you want hand crank windows and rubber floors too... no air conditioning (too complex!) and only one speaker for the AM radio too. Who needs four speakers? That's just three too many. Why have AM, FM, satellite and mpg files? Only need AM...

You wouldn't believe how many wrecks I've seen caused by 4x4 trucks driving in RWD at highway speeds, when they should've had the front engaged.

Here in Montana we have to drive long distances to get much of anything done, and for 4-6 months out of the year snow is a real possibility. I drive at least a couple times a week this time of year at 50 mph+ with 4x4 engaged.

I rarely take my truck out of 4hi from October to April and drive up to 60mph on occasion. It causes no problems.
