huh, I would've figured in this day and age with all the technology these cars and trucks have, that it would've stopped the transition from 2hi to 4low if you weren't under the right circumstances...

Anyway, lesson learned. Always always always shift into 4lo at a complete stop, in neutral or clutch in (manual trans). And never go over 10, 15mph tops in 4lo. That seems to be another thing a lot of people on here talk about doing which is really bad for your transfer case.

I don't know how 2016's work, but I can see someone in a first gen (like mine) trying to force it and breaking something that way.

It sounds like the dealer might be trying to blame you. Unless you were driving too fast in low or drove on the pavement all over in 4wd not sure how it would break on a new truck

It's kind of hard to read the OP's post a few ones back but that's kinda what I'm leaning toward too...going too fast in 4low. That'll overheat your transfer case right quick, depending on how fast you're going. I assume the 2016's will just flash at you if you try and put them into 4lo without being at a stop?

I drove my 1st gen in snow up to 40 mph in 4 low. That was 5th gear mind you. Had to use low because I haven't re-geared yet :annoyed:

Never had any issues. But mine isn't a fancy little button I guess.

Shifting to 2wd from 4 hi can be done on the fly without stopping.

Something was wrong with your truck then, it wasn't you. You can shift from 2wd to 4hi or vice versa while moving no problem, so long as you're in a relatively straight line and going under 55mph (65?). I never go that fast when making the transition so it never really matters, but I shift from 4h to 2wd all the time with no issues.

I thought it was recommended to be going under like 15 mph to do the 4wd shift?

That's for 4hi, 4lo you have to be at a stop and in neutral. Although with a manual trans I've been able to get 4lo to sync while still rolling forward a bit, so long as I have the clutch pressed in all the way. Not recommended though

Damn. It would scare the jeebus out of me if I was doing almost 60 mph and realized I probably needed the 4wd about now. I think I would have already thought that far ahead. haha

Well OP, glad they got you taken care of. And THANKS for actually letting us know what happened.

Always keep to 4h at most times lol, unless you need to use 4l. What do you guys use more on 4wd?

I feel the same way, but apparently it's designed that way for when you're in a situation at high speeds where you realize you might suddenly need traction (icy roads?)...even under those conditions I don't know why someone would be going 60 mph lol.

I live in Southern California so I only ever use 4wd recreationally. That being said, it's mostly 4lo that I need. I usually go into 4hi once I hit the fire roads but when I get deep into the trails I run, I crawl along in 4lo the majority of the time...1st to 3rd gear, never more than 10 mph or so.

edit: sorry @97handmedown I accidentally quoted your post on this originally

With 237,000 miles on my 2.7 and big tires.... 4 lo :(

Unless I'm just trying to tear apart a muddy field where I can just spin the tires and keep the RPM's up then I'm in 4 high. But if I'm climbing any incline or any obstacle or soft/deep terrain (sand, snow, deep mud, etc.) it's all low for this 1st gen.

But one day when funds are abundant and my motor finally dies.....

    I dream of regearing, a locker, a supercharger, and a fresh 2.7
