Why? If you are already in 1st gear before reaching the steep part, the clutch should be engaged with no slippage.

Probably not good to do this all the time, but I'd use 4LO. I've driven the San Juan Mountains in SW Colorado (Imogene Pass, etc.) in a Suzuki Samarai and had to do the same thing you are looking at. Get to the top, put it in the correct gear configuration, and keep going.

There’s another right turn before the big steep hill. It’s nothing we are used to in the US

They don't explode. In rare cases you may break a U-Joint or front drive shaft. Yes, I've seen it happen. But the most common problem is that every time you place the drivetrain in a bind the chain inside the transfer case stretches a little bit. Over time it will stretch enough to start slipping on the gears when under a load. BTDT and paid to have a transfer case rebuilt. Twice.

There are times when you need to use 4X4 when on dry hard pavement, and this is one of them. If the hill is that steep there will be very little weight on the front axle and it should be pretty easy for you to get some front wheel slippage that will prevent binding the driveline. You can get away with doing this for a while, but I don't advise doing it any more than necessary.

If it breaks on pavement in 4lo, it doesnt belong offroad.

Is it bogging because it’s engaging traction control?

    Reverse is definitely worse.

Stay off the clutch and just feather the gas. It can crawl pretty slow in first, and there’s enough mechanical advantage in that gear that you won’t hurt the engine if you’re only doing it for a short period. You could also left foot brake to keep the revs up but maintain a low speed around the corner, just be gentle cause if you lock up you’ll stall.

But if you do stall, use the clutch start cancel to get you going again.

My thoughts exactly. Sounds like choice of gear, aka driver error. I don't know too many driveways which they managed to pave but can't seem to be driven up.

I also wouldn't worry about my T-case for the occasional drive pavement use, your CV's are likely going to give out before a good condition t-case does.

If it is in first gear why is the clutch even engaged? Are you riding the clutch? Bottom of hill put it into first gear, take foot away from clutch, floor it. No clutched smoked

That or he has fried the clutch already and this is a symptom of it.
