It sounds like it is not engaging.

It will stop with it actually engages or disengages. It will flash/beep when it's trying to engage but can't. You should be going only a few MPH, preferably on loose ground, not turning or under power. I find it helps to push your 4wd button when you're coasting almost to a stop in neutral.

Are you shifting from 4H to 4L in Neutral ?

    This.

You must brake fully, put the truck in Neutral, and then switch to 4L. It will engage and wont beep and you can put it into drive and go

Additionally, with a manual, the shifter needs to be in neutral as well. I thought I just needed to have the clutch in, but it needs both. (Insert obligatory "I wish the transfer case had a stick as well" comment)

I have a manual too, and mines still a little bit of a princess going into 4L. With mine, I found going back into 2h, rolling a bit, then going straight to 4L usually does the trick

Mine doesn't have to be in neutral. If I'm in 4HI, I just stop the truck, press the clutch, and shift to 4LO. Doesn't matter if its in gear or not

Maybe it's the difference between 2nd and 3rd gens? I know my 1st gen just needed the clutch pressed, even if the truck was in gear. I mean, it makes sense since the truck can't get anymore in neutral (I can't pull over any farther! LOL). But there are a ton more electronics and "safety interlocks" on these newer trucks.

Must be a later model Tacoma thing...my 04 I just have to do one or the other (neutral or clutch in), doesn't have to be both.

..and my transfer case has a stick :D although, not the J-shift which is the most ideal...I still have to press the button on the shifter to go into 4HI

That's my biggest complaint about the 3rd gens - no transfer case lever! You can get a 3rd gen with a manual transmission and push button 4wd, and you can get a Trail 4R with an auto transmission and a manual transfer case?!

Put it in neutral then into 4L while at a complete stop. 4H can be engaged will moving under 55mph on the go which is great for snow and sand

My '17 4Runner has all push button, no lever, just a dial (5 speed automatic). Last time I was wheeling with it, it had trouble getting into and out of 4lo (even 4hi). I was beginning to doubt my intelligence... I was trying everything form neutral, full stop, no turns, etc... It eventually went in/came out, but it was kind of annoying.

At least with my 04 TRD, with the t-case lever, I can "feel" it going into 4lo.

2022 trd pro manual. 2h to 4h is very simple but to engage 4L i have to switch the dial to 4L and put it reverse and that is only when it engages 4L. Let me know if its the same for yall

No, it's not the same. At a stop, clutch ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR, shift into 4LO. What gear the transmission is in doesn't matter and the truck doesn't know anyway. If it doesn't go right into 4LO just jostle the drivetrain by shifting in and out of a few gears or releasing the clutch in N and then pushing it back ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR.

if you’re on a hill you can also release the brakes and let it roll slightly. The owners manual says 6spd tacos can engage 4Low up to 2mph.

Late to the party on this..but for anyone else coming to this thread it works best for me if I don't stop at 4H first. Go right from 2 to 4lo. Works more times than not. 2014 2.7 5spd.
