Yeah I put it in 4H occasionally when I'm on a road that's 45mph or less. Just to lube things as the manual says. Never dropped her into 4L yet. Probably should do that some day before warranty is out to make sure it actually works! Haha!

LOL Was that 0-50mph in 4Low? Hard to see the fine details on the video (for me at least).

I know the 4H works. But never have tried the 4L.

I did discover the horn didn't work off the lot though!! Apparently Toyota forgot to connect the ground wire for the switch. ;) So yeah, testing the minute details can be important.

Gonna ask this here since it's the only thread i saw concerning 4 lo shifting. Recently bought an '05 taco. After a couple weeks I decided to try the 4 lo. Worked fine. Shifted in and back out no problem. A few days later I used it again. left it sitting in the yard for a few hours in 4 lo (not running). Went to shift it back to 2wd. 4wd lo indicator is flashing and beeping. Not shifting out. Tried everything possible multiple times. No dice. Finally decided to remove the transfer case shift motor. Several hours and a lot of trial and error later i managed to get it back in 2wd. Don't bother shifting it into 4lo again just to be safe. So a few weeks later I'm cruising down the highway and the 4lo indicator starts blinking for no reason. after i shut it down and restart it appears to be fine. happen again a while later. tried shifting to 4hi. No dice. take it to a mechanic thinking it's gotta be a switch problem. got the switch changed out and he says it's fixed. Driving back home I get th same thing. 4lo flashing at me. Get home, kill it, restart, shift to 4hi everything good.shift to 4lo and it's fine. try shifting back to 4hi. No dice. try 2wd. nothing. parked it up and gonna call the mechanic monday. May try the whole remove shift motor and manually put it back in 2wd. Just wondering if anyone here has seen this problem and knows a solution. Thinking electrical short or bad shift motor. Any advice would be helpful including where i can get a shift motor.

Also planning on changing all transmission, transfer and diff fluids this weekend.

Edit: Forgot to mention. .05 access cab with 4.0L and 6 speed manual transmission.

Is this not in the sun visor in all 4WD Tacomas???

Yes. Let me be more specific. It will shift into 4L but it will not shift back to H4 or H2. It will not. No matter how far I drive it or how many times I go from first to reverse or turn the wheels or or switch the knob. It will shift into 4L fine but it will not shift back out. I have to remove the actuator motor assembly from the pinion gear and turn the shaft by hand back to the H2 position then turn the switch to H2 and then restart the truck. Then it is in H2. It will shift into H4 and back to H2 but it will not come out of L4.

OK, but to be clear, there are no beeps or flashing lights when you are in L4... only if you try but didn't follow the instructions (ie. depressing the clutch fully in a manual tranny, or shifting into N, not P on automatics).

No it doesn't beep or flash when I am in L4 only when I try to shift out of L4 to H4 or H2. Yes I fully stop and depress the clutch all the way to the floor with it in neutral and then switch to H4. It starts beeping and flashing and it will not shift out of L4. It will continue operating in L4 and beeping and flashing unless I move the switch back to the L4 position in which case the beeping and flashing stop. My other major concern is the 4wd and LO indicator flashing when I am traveling at highway speeds for no reason. That actuator is $775 online or $1149 from toyota. I want to make damn sure that is the problem before i purchase what is undoubtedly and non-returnable item.

I am so sorry you have a broken Toyota... I would suggest shopping around for a reasonable, Toyota mechanic if the dealer is out of line with prices. If you were around here (San Diego County) I would recommend 'Speed Freek' (Jason)!

Gonna talk to a few transmission places and see what they say, may try the junkyard route see if they'll sell just the motor

Nope. My '11 has no such directions on either side of either visor.

Why would the previous owner remove it before selling to you? Bummer... oh well, you have mine plus it is also in the owner's manual (you do have that don't you???).
