Having some issues with my 4WD system Wondering if anyone can help. I have a 2017 TrD off-road auto. My 4x4 light flashes all the time but is in 2hi. When I turn the 4x4 knob no clicks nothing and light just keeps flashing. I’ve disconnected battery and hooked back up but still flashes. I’ve pulled 4WD fuse and Ecu actuator fuse and still nothing. When fuses are pulled though no 4x4 light flashes but when fuses installed again flashing comes back. Any help would be appreciated

4x4 hi or low or both? Has it ever engaged? Try rolling and turning D/R?

Did you go through any deep water crossings lately? It may be that your transfer case actuator box flooded and corroded the electric components inside it.

There is an actuator in the front diff. Maybe damaged or gummed up.

Pull the actuator and open it up, that’s probably your issue. I wish someone made a waterproof one, I have avoided doing some deep water crossings for this reason- because of the problems people had with theirs. I think water clarity probably plays a big part of it, if it’s a fresh water crossing it probably not as bad as a salty or silty water. We have pretty salty water out here in the desert whenever there is a crossing, and I go around.

The transfer case actuator or the front diff actuator? would the symptoms of both be the same? Or how do I know which actuator

From what I’m reading, it looks like the transfer case actuator motor - when that fails it prevents you from switching into 4x4. I would get it diagnosed though, that’s an expensive part.

is the blinking light intermittent? does it ever operate normal? if it just never works, i would look at the actuator like these guys are saying.

if, on the other hand, it's intermittent, then you may be seeing a somewhat known issue with an inconsistent ground connection to the actuator. if that's the case add a new star washer to reconnect the ground. i have that issue myself but haven't been able to deal with it yet due to life. the issue comes back at times after getting her wet. then goes away a day or two later as it dries. waiting for corrosion to kill the ground completely, just trying to get it back on the rack soon.

Look at your front diff ADD actuator. Odds say that's it. Doubly so given you've dunked it.

No it’s not intermittent. It’s blinking like 4wd is trying to engage all the time but trucks in 2wd and dials turned to 2wd.

If you want to fix it yourself, you have to decide which type of troubleshooting you like to do.

Do you want to take parts off and look for corrosion, etc.?

Do you want to pull out the ohmmeter and start wringing out harnesses and actuators?

Do you want to install techstream and see what signal is honked up?

Statistically it is most commonly the front (ADD) actuator, but it could be either ADD or transfer.

    To ohmmeter it, start here

I'd start a case with toyota. It is an off-road vehicle and should have been built to withstand water crossings. If it goes through we'll all thank you as we wait for yet another tsb for our trucks.
