Well, this guy goes 55mph on 4lo on asphalt. Not to mention aswery who launches his tacoma on the drag strip in 4wd all the time with no ill effects. I'd say it's ok to be in 4wd as long as you're going in a relatively straight line.

Your Honda is AWD, not 4X4. An AWD system is designed to allow all 4 wheels to turn at different speeds. They work great on wet pavement, light snow/ice and light duty off roading.

A true 4X4 vehicle locks the front and rear axles together forcing them to turn at the same speed giving great traction off road. But when you corner the wheels on the outside have to turn faster than the inside wheels to keep up. If everything is locked together the inside wheels have to slip slightly on the ground in order to make the turn. Not a problem in mud, sand, gravel etc. But if on pavement or even a hard packed dirt surface it puts a strain on the drive train.

You probably won't break anything immediately. But you have a chain connecting the transmission to the transfer case that looks like a giant bicycle chain. Over time it stretches and will start slipping on the teeth of the gears. They ain't cheap to replace. Ask me how I know.

    Some photos.

Eh I drove my first gen in 4WD for months at a time up in Alaska. Sometimes even at highway speeds. 250k miles on that old broad. Like someone said in this thread, dont be afraid of your 4WD system. Just learn to respect it

4hi is designed for up to 65mph but what worries me is when people say they use 4lo up to 40mph or so, that cannot be good for the t-case

...^^^... I had a locker on the Ridgeline ... and it was called a 4WD from Honda ... but I called it an AWD w/ a locker.

Don't get me wrong ... having had a bunch of Toyota trucks ... the Ridgeline was too car like & too big for me ... but sill a cool vehicle to drive on the road.

But, if I had a family and wanted a dry pavement to rain to snow vehicle ... and wanted more of an SUV ride ... it would be between the new T4R and the Ridgeline (if a bed was needed).

I will probably drive Tacoma's (maybe a Honda too) the rest of my life if Toyota stills gives me good vehicles.

My all time favorite 4x4 is a Unimog :) or an old Dodge Power Wagon

PS ... My favorite real life daily driver (in Canada) was a 4WD drive early 1980s Subaru with a Cyclops grille light. Front wheel drive most of the time ... until I shifted into 4WD (on the fly too) and it was great. Had a CJ-7 and a Subaru in Canada and the Subie was the best IMO.
    ..

Actually it locks the transfer case, not the axles, forcing the drive shafts to turn at the same speeds

Running a Tacoma on dry asphalt in 4WD will kill it dead.

However ... for you closet Ridgeline lovers ... running a Ridge in 4WD on dry asphalt will give it more traction & wanting more asphalt. :)

But ... the Taco's 4WD ... in real off road ... will eat the Ridgeline alive ...
