    Hi everyone,
As title states, my wife drove about 50 km on wet pavement in 4 hi. She forgot to put it back into 2hi. What damage could have occurred and any way to check it over? Thanks in advance! ☹️

That alone probably did no damage. Just about everyone has done something similar at times. I know I have. If done on a regular basis over time it will lead to premature parts wearing out. You rarely see a catastrophic failure, but if done on dry pavement and sharp turns are made then it puts everything under more stress

Like 99.9% chance no damage unless she was driving 50km weaving through a parking lot.

Mostly straight (not turning tight from street to street) there just isn't enough different in front and rear axle speed to build up a significant amount of strain.

If she was out on the highway it's probably fine. If it was engaged driving in/out of parking spots in a parking lot she may have heard some binding or noise

The tires are now cooked and need replacement. Lucky for you I have a set of 5 Goodyear wrangler takeoffs that you can buy for a great deal

I mean. It’ll bind turning. I’m really not sure what would break. Snap a chain in the center diff? The chain is strong and you’d probably know if you did.

plus wet is not the worst. There’s still some ability to slip versus completely dry on abrasive asphalt depending on what the roads are like where you live.

I wonder how “AWD” models function. If they too have a locked center diff with a chain. Or something else more fluid for that like a Torsen.

ie 4runner limited, manual FJ cruiser, etc

Thanks everyone, for info and the chuckles!!! I have read others posts asking about the same thing and I have said in my head it would probably be fine. I guess I just wanted to hear the same. Tacoma World is the best! Cheers

It’s fine. Just do a 4WD burnout and spin em till they pop!

If I'm pulling out into heavy traffic from gravel or wet, I'll engage 4-HI to "launch", then once accelerated turn it back off again.

Especially if the truck was empty or lightly loaded, the back end has plenty of slip on wet pavement to avoid damage.

They have a interface that can slip instead of a chain or gears. Think torque converter in place of a clutch.

As everyone else has said. I wouldn't worry about it.

At least once a month I drive mine to work and back (10 Miles / 16 Kilometers) in 4 hi just to keep every thing functioning.

    Yep. Same.
The manual says to exercise the 4x4 system for 10 miles at least every month.
If I can't get that done in the dirt, I pick a straight paved road in the rain to accomplish it.

Have done so since 2017. No problems have been revealed yet.
