Hi. My 01 Tacoma 5speed manual button 4wd only engages when I cycle the key multiple times while the 4wd button is in the on position. And then it easily goes back to 2wd when clicking the button back into the off position. I’ve been trying to figure the issue out for weeks. I’ve clean the actuators and replaced the 4wd transfer case switch on top of trans as well. 4wd will not engage like it should unless I cycle key. Any one might know the issue? Please help. Also the indicator light doesn’t flash like it’s trying to work.

Weird issue. Have you check the push 4wd button for continuity?

    ^^^ This x2 ^^^

The first thing that came to mind for me as well: Intermittent or worn out switch that's finally calling it a day... Considering it's 22 years old: not bad. "It's done good" Also check around for sketchy ground(s).

Find out where you can get the 4wd schematic and start testing. Sorry, not much help.

    Welcome to TacomaWorld.

Wish I could be more help. I'll admit I know nothing about the 1st gen 4wd system. My expertise is mid-fifties GM electricals and second and third generation Mustangs.
Others in here do though, so all I can offer is the old "folk medicine cures" for intermittent issues that are cured by the "on-off" cycles you are experiencing: Worn switches, bad grounds and maybe old and tired relays, dirty connectors.

Hang in there! I learned the 2nd generation 4x4 system quirks, troubleshooting and cures in here.
