I have an 06, extra cab, 2.7L, manual, 2wd prerunner that I'm about to start collecting parts for a 4wd conversion. I ordered the FJ inner and outer shift boots today :) . My vin sticker says "A02A/R155", so that's the 3:73 rear differential and R155 5spd if I have the correct info.
I have been doing a lot of research online. So much that my head is turning to jello. LOL
I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on the more expensive parts for my conversion. I have no plans of using anything electric. No ADD and a manual transfer case is the route I will be taking.
    I have a few questions.
    1) Can I use a front differential and front driveshaft from a 4Runner, GX470 or FJ Cruiser?
    2) Can I use the rear driveshaft from any of the vehicles listed in the first question?
    3) I have plans to use a FJ automatic transfer case, but do the other transfer cases have the internal shifter levers under the plate bolted over the shifter hole? Can a shifter be bolted on?

    R155 questions:
    1) Do the bell housings swap from 4cyl to 6cyl and are the input shafts the same length and spline count? I ask this because I may have the option of going V6 later on and I would like to keep my drivetrain for the most part.

    Thanks for any help given.

TnShooter Good thing I posted. I found a code sheet but I take it that it does not apply to my year since it's slightly older.
    Thank you.

Some years back I swapped the open cage from my differential for a clutch pack out of a Tundra, so the "A" on my axle code is not quite correct anymore. LOL
I did keep my stock gearing though.

Any 120 platform front differential should work in the taco.

You can use them but would still have to be custom length. bolt pattern at the transfer might be different but you can drill out to suit

the trucks that didn’t come with manual shifters would be extremely difficult to add. You want a manually shifting transfer case from an automatic FJ cruiser or 4runner, I believe they come on the trail teams or trd pro model 4runners but not entirely sure.

the bell housings will not swap over. You’ll need an R155F or R156F trans. I believe you can also run an older R150/151F trans and swap in a gear driven case from the pre taco pickups.

Ok, I'm waiting on the bigger parts to show up. At the shop right now are the FJ inner and outer shift boots, FJ transfer case from an automatic with a manual shifter, transfer case shifter arm (No shift knob though.) Front driveshaft, rear driveshaft, 4x4 front hub assemblies, Front CV shafts, Manual 4x4 transmission cross member, front differential bushing that replaces the roller bearing and hub seals.
The R155F trans and the Tacoma 4:10 front differential are in route to the shop.
Once I have all of the big stuff sitting in front of me, I will make a list of mounts, hardware, bushings and parts that I will replace while in there. I will order those and then get this party started. I expect to do most of it in a Saturday or two. I'm doing this to my daily driver, so I have to do it and keep my truck on the road at the same time. Well, that's unless I fire up the old 240sx and drive her to and from work for a couple of days...20150411_164804.jpg

The front differential showed today. Minor setback though. The seller advertised the differential with brackets attached in all of his photos, but didn't ship them with the differential. I sent him a message earlier about this situation. He replied that he want to address this issue and that he needs pics of the differential that showed up. I'm going to stab the shafts into it and confirm the ratio before I send him pics. If he sent me the wrong ratio, Oh boy..

I hope the Transmission comes complete. LOL

Well, I was getting closer then hurricane IDA came through and gave us a rough ride. The project is on hold for the moment, all parts are palleted and on a shelf in our shop. I'm waiting on all delivery services to come back online in and around my area so that I can order around $200 worth of small parts. After that, I should be good to go. The cheaper hubs and axles are just to get the ball rolling. I will be sourcing Toyota components after I have it all together. With the recent storm, I just might find complete trucks in the yards close to me.
