I made an oopsie today while sitting in a parking lot - I went to turn up the AC and put the truck in 4HI instead. Oops, switched back to 2HI and turned the AC up and forgot about it. Once my order came out, I went to back up (reverse + turn out of my spot) and felt some resistance. Realized that the truck was still in 4wd for some reason so I pulled back into the spot and tried again. Felt the resistance again and gave it a bit more gas and heard a loud POP, then the truck backed up normally. Pulled onto the highway and everything felt fine, flipped it into 4HI quick on a straight stretch and it seemed to engage and disengage just fine. Drove it the rest of the way home in 2HI with no issues.

Did I fuck something up? Anything I should crawl under the truck and check out?

I highly doubt any damage was done.
Pop was the sound of torque bind being released. It wouldn't hurt to look for leaks or tears in CV boots.

It happens. Most likely no issues. Just remember to let it disengage before turns like that on dry pavement.

That's one of those things you try not to do, but something similar happens to all of us sooner or later. I've forgotten to switch out of 4X4 before turning back onto a paved road in the past and felt resistance. Damage from stuff like this is cumulative. If it happens occasionally you'll probably never have a problem. But if you make a habit out of driving in 4X4 on pavement it will bite you in the butt sooner than it should. Unfortunately most people don't keep one long enough for it to show up. It is the next guy who gets the truck that usually pays for the damage.

I did the exact same thing thinking I was turning on the AC. Now I put electrical tape over the 4x4 knob.
