Just got a 2010 tacoma access cab 4x4 5spd try to put it in 4lo and the light just blinks and won't stop beeping, put it in 4hi it engages but when you try to drive it's like you're engaging the parking brake it gets slower and slower and acts like it's under stress and will make the clutch start burning, any idea what could be causing this? Thanks

Sounds to me like some one swapped gears in one of the differentials and they are a miss matched ratio.

It is possible the previous owner did not use the four wheel drive much. It is not the way you are supposed to do it but it works when it is hard to do.
Stop completely put in neutral and shift into 4 hi. rev the engine a little then put it in gear. You should be completely stopped for 4 lo anyhow. Had an 2008 that was hard to do when I first got it. that helped. If it still blinks when you start out vary your speed.

Reread your post. Bubbabud makes sense.

I agree with Bubbabud if your tires are all the same size and properly inflated.

Been messing with it as long as your running it fines but if you're only going 10-15 or slower it starts acting like your pulling the emergency brake and still won't go into low, stopped and took it out of 4hi went to pull off and it clanked pretty hard and went back to 2wd

too much tension between the front and rear tires--???? try level surface-back up-see if that helps.

    You can't engage 4lo unless you're stopped

My brother bought an old 4 runner that did this and it was mismatched gears.

Put it up on jack stands and engage 4wd if the wheels spin you got your answer.

Go back to basic's if its bogging engine down as you describe and made a big bang when you took it out of 4x4 hi its because the drive train is binding and the cause of the binding is because the axle's are trying turn 2 different speeds this caused by either miss matched tires or mismatched axles I'm still putting my money on axle swap in the past. I would bet that previous owner broke some thing and put a junk yard transplant just to get it on the road or to sell it. I have been wrong in the past will be in the future but you described the classic sign's of miss matched gears.
As for 4 low it wont engage if there is that much bind on the drive train. So check gear ratios in front and rear if they are the same then I'm blowing smoke and if not then you have found the problem.

I'm going to take it back where I bought it Monday cause it came with a year warranty and have them send it to toyota in town and see what happens hopefully cause I've tried everything finally got it to go into 4lo and it seemed to be fine then but still got the same issue in 4hi

as you can see in my avatar--had a 91--the only time I had difficulty was when the road was not slippery enough.

When my truck hasn't been in 4wd for a long time sometimes it takes a long time to engage. Once I hadn't used it for about a year (was traveling and the truck sat) and it took like 10 miles of driving on a snowy road for it to engage. The more regularly I use 4wd the easier it is to shift in and out.
