    Dear Bert,

Sorry to hear about your transfer case shifter being stuck. That sucks.

Okay, so if I understand you correctly, your 1999 Tacoma has manual hubs with the old style j-shifter transfer case. Did you remove the transfer case from the transmission when you installed the new clutch? This is indeed a strange problem. I would try reversing the truck for a little bit of distance, and then shift the transfer case to another gear. I always reverse my truck whenever I am shifting in and out of four wheel drive, and I have the exact same rig as you.

    Good Luck,
    Paul

Did you remove the transfer case shifter while taking out the transmission? Did you separate the transmission and the transfer case when you dropped the transmission? You can remove the transfer case on its own if you want to check for problems, but I don't know if it would make diagnosing any possible issues easier.

If you accidently place the shifter in the wrong position when re-installing the transmission and transfer case , there is a good chance the shifter will bind not allowing you to select any transfer case gear ranges .
My suggestion is to remove the transfer case shifter , then place the transfercase gate into neutral .
This can be done with a large flat screwdriver .
Once the transfer case is truly in nuetral , place the shifter back in place without bolting the shifter back up as a test and try to see if you can grab all the gear ranges .
If the transfer case worked good before you removed everything to replace the clutch , there is a chance the transfer case got knocked into a different gear range when you were re-installing the shifter . This is a common issue
