4WD so simple that there's no way it will work or someone else would've thought of this already

    I got to thinkin the other day (actually after lookin at some diagram of some AWD) that you could/should be able to buy the front diff and cv axles and hubs and drive shaft, and attach a pulley on the end of the front drive shaft and have one pressed on to the short rear shaft between the carrier bearing and the tranny, and have a belt driven 4wd high system. as long as the two pulleys were the same size, and the diffs were the same ratio everything should work out fine, and i had even thought you could use a tensioner and lever system similar to engaging a lawn mower blade to engage and dissengage the front drive shaft. The only issue i could think of, pending a belt was used that would be appropriat for such a job, would be slipping in wet/muddy conditions but a pretty simple sheet metal box could be fab'd up and bolted around that to prevent most if not all of the splashing. I honestly feel like this idea is going to wind up like communism and look and sound great on paper and not practical in the real world, but if there is a chance that it would you could convert a prerunner to at least a 4wd hi capable truck. Obviously we're getting kinda slow at work.

    right but also requires computer alterations this would be a way around everything none mechanic

    2wd tranny is a750e and the 4wd is a750f, there isn't a way to attach a tcase to the 2wd tranny so i would have to swap transmissions for a 4wd tranny also

    do u have a link to an example of which you speak? also i very pleased how long this thread has made it and stayed on topic including such words as :tranny, shaft, and pulley

    Pre 98 i believe they were manual disconnects at the hub dunno much more than that though

    More pics look at 4wd samurai they ran divorced cases. Even the 2wd ones had a transfercase it was just missing the front output.
