I think if the truck still senses a load on the transfer case, it won't shift out of 4WD. Did you try taking your foot off the gas and coasting? That always makes it quicker for mine. If that doesn't help, it may be your actuator or sensor?

My 08 Tacoma did the same thing last month during freezing cold weather. I fixed it by leaving it in the driveway running for about 30 minutes. Once it warmed up on the asphalt, it shifted back into 2WD without any problem.

No problems here in Canukistan. -35ºC, never had an issue with it sticking ever.

    Sure glad I didn't get a PreRunner!

I moded 1999 Taco so much it had turned to Land Cruiser
Whats the milage on the truck and when was the last time 4wd was used? Plus when was the last time oil was replaced in transfer case in front diff.

If 4wd is not used for long time it tends to stick a little. Usually finding straight gravel road and driving truck while turning 4h on and then off will get things moving again. If problem persists you can always unbolt 4wd switch and either grease up or replace.

This might be a semantics thing- but

    Order of Events:
    Turn Knob
    Light Flashes
    Turn Knob Back
    Light keeps flashing

    Am I getting that right??

Well...If the light never went solid-Then 4Hi was never engaged....That's the first issue.

Figure that out and then go from there....

    Wife rolled it 3x mod...
FYI: was doing some wheeling today and when I tried to switch out of 4lo it just beeped at me... tried everything I could think of, ended up driving it all the way home in 4lo.

Also, I could not get it out of park without pushing in the little button, the gear selector indicator on the dash was not showing anything, and my turn signals were not working.

As it turns out the IG1 fuse under the dash(#32) blew. It is for the Back-up lights, air conditioning system, passenger airbag manual on-off switch, and SHIFT LOCK SYSTEM.

What happened is I must have shorted out the back-up light circuit at the already broken trailer harness when I dragged it on a nice drop-off.

I hope this helps someone out of a jam... Driving home in 4LO for 10 miles sucked!

It's a 10A fuse...there are a couple spare fuses in the engine compartment fuse box, or else you can always pull a fuse from a circuit that you don't quite need to get home like the #29 PWR OUTLET, #35 WSR (wiper/washer), or any of the power window fuses (#30, #33, #34, #36) make sure if you put a fuse of a different rating you go up in amperage not down but by no more than 50% for fast blow fuses to reduce the chance of damage to the electrical system and make sure to replace any and all fuses to there originals rating.

    Fuckin truth.

My buddies 4hi got stuck and we freaked out trying to get it to unfuck itself (2 hours from anything resembling a town).

Sure enough, some random forum online said that a stuck 4wd will disengage if put in reverse. (thank god for Verizon and smartphones)
