All original with 195K miles. Purchased some 22 years ago with an 18 year gap of ownership.
I am having intermittent 4WD operations and it must be a faulting switch at the transfer case shifter. This is a V6/5 speed combo, both shifters on the floor. Where is the switch located at and how difficult is it to replace? I guess I should inquire if there are any other switches that can be causing this?

I can hear the ECU (I believe at least as I hear a click in the passenger side kick panel) signal to swap vacuum solenoids to engage the differential. It will click as I am moving the shifter around and the 4WD symbol light will go on and off to match the clicks when moving it around.

Thanks in advance for any and all inputs,
    Mike

There is a good reference at https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/1st-gen-transfer-case-identifcation-for-replacement-swap.753707/ put together by @turbodb that shows the various configurations and switch locations, etc. I’m guessing your transfer case is a j-shift? You’re looking for the switch near the top of the case indicated by the blue arrow below:

It’s pretty easy to get to and replace. That sounds like the most reasonable cause of the issue you’re describing.
