4WD T case question

Does the front drive shaft ever disconnect from the chain in the T Case? or do they stay 'mated' 100% of the time?

in other words if i were to free spin the front drive shaft by hand while it was in 2WD mode would the T case chain spin along with it?

Best photo I had. That's the front output gear that mates to the front driveshaft and the chain. They are mechanically coupled at all times.
