4wd vs. 2WD

    So I have been reading the info on the differences between 2 and 4Wd (all wheel vs on demand) http://www.4x4abc.com/4WD101/def_turnfull.html

    According to the Owners Manual Toyota recommends that you engage the 4wd HIGH once a month. Assuming that you don't offroad the vehicle and it's not snowing - what are your options?

    Would appreciate any thoughts on what you are doing to run your Taco's 4x4 monthly.

    find a field once a month & drop it in 4wd for a bit. Or just go wheeling as often as you can... Done. ;)

    i know turning in 4x4 on pavement is bad news and yada yada yada, but if this is such a serious problem, what good are these trucks in rocks? just curious, if my truck wont scrub a tire before breaking hardware, i'll freakin sell it.

    op, toyota recomends, 10 miles per month as you stated. these trucks, to me are designed mostly for street use. i dont think they planned on us destroying somebody's farm-land to keep up with the manual

    Hi all.

    I drive to work once a month in H4. You can turn on dry pavement - your tires will scrub. I don't put much power down while turning and do long shallow arcs.

    The problem with turning on dry pavement only occurs when you are going very slow and try to turn sharp - as in more than 1/2 turn on the steering wheel - or put the hammer down while turning at speed.

    I tested my truck to make sure the 4WD worked when it was new in a parking lot. When in H4 you can feel the tension in the steering wheel when moving slow and turning. This told me I was actually in 4WD long before there was any actual tire scrubbing or anywhere near enough binding in the drive line to hurt anything. Again, I was using very little throttle and only turned the steering wheel until I could feel a tension that wasn't there in 2H (less than 1/2 turn).

    I've been asking this same question recently with no response. I agree with you. Is it "bad" or is it not? I know I've forgotten and done by accident. I didn't snap anything.

    Has anyone ever heard of a tacoma snapping components from turning on dry whatever in 4wd? If not, then this subject is a non issue.

    If yes, then toyota should consider making the switch harder to operate by accident and maybe make it look different than the fan switch which is a few inches away.

    I don't drive 10 miles per month in 4x4.
    I try to at least put it in 4x4 every month, but some times I miss a month.
    I use the local gravel parking lot at the boat ramp.
    But you can just go back and forth a few times in your drive way if that is all you have to work with.


    The most important thing that need to be done is that trucks with the TRD OFF-ROAD with Rear Locker *NEED* to be LOCKED at least once a month.
    You don't even have to drive it far. 50' will do if that is all you have.
    Failure to do so can result in the Locker Actuator sticking. I've seen this issue more than once.
    Do not turn the the wheel on pavement or an hard surface with the locker engaged. You can an will cause damage.

    IMO, which isn't much, I don't think by NOT dropping in to 4x4 once a month will hurt the truck.
    I've seen way to many truck that never get used in 4x4 but MAYBE once a year. Never seen one with an issue yet.
    The Locker Actuator is the problem I found.

    The only reason they recommend doing this is so the motor that engages the front drive doesn't stick due to not being used. All you have to do is switch into 4WD, then switch back. You can do this on any pavement- just don't do it while trying to park or make a tight turn. Ditto for the rear locker. Hell, you probably don't even need to be driving- all you need to do is to make that motor switch in and out.
