Stick to the desert and hard packed dirt. The only time I got stuck in my 05 2wd is in Pimso sand dunes and easily got out. The locker works really well actually...

Im just curious as to what the "short cut" was. Looks like maybe trying to make your own parking spot or something.. I can see fencing on one side and in front, but can't tell if it ends to the right.. I don't usually laugh at other's misfortunes, but this gave me a little chuckle.. All in good fun, thanks

That pic shows just how dangerous parking lots can be. Exactly why you need to drive around with maxtrax and a RTT at all times

That's pretty common. You had mud caked up on the inside of your wheels. Threw off the wheel balance and wobbled like crazy.

3F6DEAAE-0E58-49C4-A6A9-FC380F600400.jpg And more than a few off road places. I didn’t have a hitch or shackles. Tied tow ropes and got yanked out before. I had Comp TA’s , and they were bald from racing it. CF426751-84BA-40D2-BEA2-4E7FBCEE1961.jpgThis little hunk of crap hauled my Suzuki Quad, fishing gear, furniture and 3 people in the front seat. It’s climbed tough grade with a shale rock base in southern illinois. (Got a running start at it) 26 yrsxafter buying my last new Toyota truck I buy a 2wd Prerunner

! It went to the Bonneville salt flats, rode some Michigan trails,
And then 2 yrs later traded it on my 2017 Tacoma 34D59720-1420-4D1D-B827-9C60EF7F4BA2.jpgIf you can drive in 2wd then you can drive through anything. 10yrs of Wisconsin winters and had 2wd. Hell my work truck is 2wd. Don’t let anyone tell ya you can’t get through the trails. Just make sure a big truck is in front and a big truck behind to pull your ass out!

    Whatchu doin there mate?

Anyway, to answer your question, if you threw mud tires on and did the 2Lo mod, you'd probably have a pretty sweet rig.

I have a OR, but you will be suprised what a 4x2 can do offroad with just good tires and a limited slip differential.

4x2 can’t even get in my driveway. It makes no sense why Toyota even offers an OR in 2wd

Oh... ok. Just saw this. As mentioned by others, a winch does help but it wouldnt have helped you here unless you had a receiver hitch mounted one and plugged it into the back (i can pull with mine from either end that eway). Traction boards would help move you forward out of your rut unless the fence was closer to your front end than it looks in the picture, and a shovel combined with the boards could have gotten you back over the curb.

So yeah, a good shovel and tires, traction boards for a basic setup. Also look at hilifts with the wheel sling attachment, you can lift each wheel and backfill it with dry dirt with your shovel. The next best step before investing in a winch and bumpers and all that may be to outfit it with a limited slip differential or one with a locker..

They do? Mine’s 4x4, but I only use 4h or 4l when I get stuck or start getting squirrely in 2wd.

If he had room to go forward it could have. What a trap!
