Hey guys, last year I did a 4x4 conversion on my 2001 Tacoma Prerunner and wrote it all down. Hope this helps someone.

    Thanks,
    Jerry

Edit: updated pdf 03/24, also added sick picture of my truck

can the parts from a 2000 4Runner 4x4 5 speed transmission be used to convert a 2004 Tacoma crew cab automatic transmission into a 4x4?

As far as I’m aware everything besides the transmission should work. Double check though @tacothuy

good deal, I actually joined today after buying a 2003 crew cab taco yesterday that is a prerunner. Trying to figure out everything I need to for the conversion! I already found a Elocker rear third im hoping to install and then start with trying to find a trans/tcase and driveshafts. So 01-04 runner/taco auto should work with my 03' auto? Great videos by the way!

Unless you modify the axle housing, the 3rd members are not swappable between 8" and 8.4" axle housings. I do not know exactly what needs to be modified. It is suggested that you swap the entire axle.

As far as I’m aware, yes any transmission from those years should work. However I vaguely remember hearing something about extra electrical stuff on the 03-04 transmissions but I could be totally wrong and I could be thinking of the transfer cases with the 4wd button. Double check

Welcome to TW! Not sure of your timelines or where you are located, but I’m midway through swapping out my automatic transmission for a 5-speed for my 2003 X-cab 4x4. When that’s done I’ll have an an automatic trans + t/c for sale, as well as driveshafts.

here’s my thread on the auto-to-manual swap:
