As I shit here (yes shit, I'm in my bathroom I think and write best in here) I ponder my compulsive spending habits which ultimately landed me in my 2017 TRD OR with full tech, jbl audio, tonneau cover, and locking rear diff. I was tremendously excited when I purchased my truck back on the 27th of April one week after crashing and totaling my 2012 Nissan Frontier so I was anxious to get back in my "own" vehical and be young wild and free again. San Diego native here who goes to fiesta island when it rains and that's about it because of my prior 2wd experiences. Now, going thru TW forums I feel like I'm missing out on 4x4 even though I know the locking rear differential on my 2wd is more than adequate for my daily driving purposes. I do enjoy riding my dirt bike and going snow boarding in the winter and have family in Salt Lake City, UT so I do road trip a few times a year and head to Northern California as well. I don't know if it's true 4wds have more fun? But I wish I thought out my car buying more in depth because I did put 10k down on my new truck. I currently have 6,500 miles on it and want to trade in and trade up. I know their might be more threads like this out there but for peace of mind, and a little bit of the millennial in me I want some personalized responses. Should I trade in my truck and get the same packages just including the 4x4? I live at home with my parents and besides the truck payment and insurance I have no other financial responsibilities. Before I keep throwing money into my current truck should I upgrade for the crawl control or enjoy the rear diff lock? Now that I've had time to think I'm stuck at a cross road that I'm not going to look back on after this. What is your .02 on this? Help a brother out guys

    Well that was quite informative.

OP. Do what you want. If you can afford and don't lose out too much (you will lose on a trade up) and it's worth it to you.

You think you're in your bathroom? I hope you are for your sake, or your parents are going to ground you for shitting on the rug again.

Well I paid $35,780 OTD so I don't want to trade up and owe much more than my original truck cost

Then you should not have a new car or truck or any other extras until you can afford the basics of life such as shelter /food and the like.

Do it. You are going to get bent trading up but you already know this. you mentioned trips to the snow. I'm assuming Mammoth, Big Bear, and out to Utah. The first time you have to throw on chains and see the 4x4 rigs cruising by, you will die a little inside. You also mentioned riding your dirt bike so I'm assuming trips to Glamis, Superstition etc four wheel drive makes all the difference in the soft stuff. Take it from a fellow San Diegan who drives in the same conditions you described. Do it or you will regret it. A locker isn't going to matter driving in snow or sand.

I meant something like treat them to a nice dinner, pay for a weekend getaway, you know-something nice. But I guess if your idea of something nice means going to Costco, oh well.

There's a sticky post at the top of the forum with MSRP and invoice prices for each truck type, option, etc. You can quickly see the incremental cost to move to 4x4.

And you need to factor trade-in value loss.

Probably need to contemplate all that over another dump.
