    Hi all,

I apologize if I missed this info but does anyone know of the differences of the 4.0 that is on 4x4 models and whether it can be dropped into a Tacoma with 2WD? Will anything need to be changed to fit?

    thank you for any help!

You probably need a different transmission at minimum.

    I don't know anything else

4.0 4wd and 2wd same engines. No mods required

Why would the transmission not work if they’re both automatic?

2wd and 4wd are the same engine, 05-11 and 12-15 have different heads and exhaust manifolds and do not directly interchange so you will need to keep that in mind but 2wd and 4wd are the same.

The A750 transmission in these trucks (and some other trucks - FJs/4Runners and maybe some Tundras?) use a different tailstock for the 2wd vs 4wd - the 2WD gets the A750E, the 4wd gets the A750F. Swapping in another engine makes no difference. You can put the 1GR-FE out of any Tacoma and some other vehicles (as long as it is a single VVT 1GR-FE, not a dual VVT as found in some other Toyotas) into your truck, but if you need a trans, make sure you get a 2WD (A750E) or make arrangements to swap the 2WD tailstock from your trans onto the 4WD donor trans.

Also note that if you have a truck that is equipped with the secondary air injection system (your user info says 2014, so yes it is), you will need to swap accordingly, that is, make sure your donor 1GR-FE is an SAI unit - if you put an SAI engine into a non-SAI truck, you need to get blocking plates/blocking headers. In your case, you want a 2012-2015 engine if it's coming out of a Tacoma.

thank you very much that’s very helpful. I only need the engine so looks promising. I was aware of the SAI part though could’ve been a big problem otherwise lol.

may have to go down this path myself. There’s no decent shops in my area and I’ve been able to find a couple yards that offer a warranty without needing a mechanic to install.

do you remember how you sourced your engine?

I got it from a Toyota dismantler in SoCal, they used a fork lift to get it into my bed where it sat until I bought an engine hoist and transmission jack from harbor freight

There isn’t any difference from the motor between 4WD and 2WD but there is a difference between 05-11 motors, and 12-15 motors due to the secondary air pump system

I may send you a DM when I do mine in case I run into a dilemma and hopefully you remember how you handled it lol. I’m in the central coast area (Monterey Bay)

Thank you! I’ve been looking at Doug Thorley headers wondering why the 2011s won’t fit a 2012. The 2.5 gen can be tough to mod sometimes.

Certain headers will fit if you’re willing to delete the 2aip, I have 05-11 headers on my 06 with a 2015 engine. It was the best way for me to get the engine to work

No smog or inspection issues in the Texas panhandle. My build is starting from a rear-ended (Magnuson) supercharged 2015 from a salvage auction, with a 2012 daily driver. I have a strong love-hate relationship with the 2.5 gen IMG_1283.jpg
