I have been reading all the older forums about losing 4 wheel drive ability. I have a 2004 Tacoma, automatic transmission with the 4x4 switch on the secondary shifter next to the main shifter. It's a push button. So mine recently stopped working. When I push the 4w button in, the light doesn't come on and the truck won't go into 4 wheel drive...BUT, I can hear a piston sound in the front actuator when I push the button in and out. I've read about pulling the Actuator and soldering the point on the tiny motor as well as cleaning inside there, bit if I am hearing movement in there doesn't that mean the motor is actually working? New to the site and not super mechanical but I listen well and would love to hear suggestions on approaching a fix? Thank you.

Just how did you get to the point it does not seem to work?

Worked last time you engaged it?? New to you vehicle and this was missed pre purchase??

Are you sure it is not the bulb is just burned out??

Do you know for sure that it is not engaging?

Either you have super hearing or it is very very quiet where you are to hear that move from the cab.

If you are sure it is not engaging, start by following wires to connections.. Start at front actuator, may have to move around to the transfer case-disconnect and spray liberally electronics connection cleaner- QD has worked for me. Sometimes oil leaks and time make their way in and do not allow a solid connection. $5 and crawling around
