    Hi everyone.

I am going to swap my 2002 prerunner with the 2.7 to manual and 4x4.
I have a 99 xtracab donor truck with the 2.7

I have a couple of questions for those who did the swap:

1: Is the crossmember compatible from the 4x4 manual truck to the auto prerunner? I read some comments saying you have to cut and weld, other say you can just swap the crossmember because just the transmission mount is different. I would just like some confirmation on this.

2: I have a j-shift transfer case with the ADD hubs, I would like to retain this as I want to use 2wd on the highway outside of winter to have better MPG. Is it possible to retain the ADD? Every thread I have seen on the swap had a manual hub conversion.

Those are the 2 things that are blurry for me and clarifying this would make the swap alot more straightforward in my head!

You can absolutely keep ADD as this combination was offered in both the Tacoma and 4Runner. What you're seeing is the 'easiest' version of said conversion since J-shift and manual hub setup will be all mechanical.

J-shift transfer case will have a 12V out signal (I think it's 12V) to communicate and tell your vehicle it is in 4x4; you'll get the cool light on your dash not to mention your actuator will engage.

What's important to know is whether you have an actuator from a 95.5 - 00 or 01 - 04 as the early variants are vacuum actuated, later variants are electric.

Will a j-shift transfer case from an 04 auto work with a 5MT swap? Or is there something with the output shafts that would need to be changed?

So it seems I have a vacuum actuated TC since my truck is a 99. I will try and narrow my research to that.

From a quick research, this is what I found: 1st gen Transfer Case Identifcation for Replacement / Swap | Tacoma World

Yeah I have that post saved. And have read GearCrucnchers and several swap threads.

I just never saw a definitive answer to my question. I have an 04 auto with a j-shift transfer case with ADD and ABS brakes.

Would this swap onto an R150F?

The first time I asked this question is because in my 98 xtra cab (manual trans) the gear shifter is on the left and the transfer case shifter is on the right.

In my 04 auto, the transfer case shifter is on the left.

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!

I believe the 1st gen crossmember stays the same for manual and auto in extended cab and double cab. I believe @Speedytech7 swapped a manual for an auto. He should know for sure.

It's less Tacoma and more mod
As long as it's a V6 the the crossmember stays in the same place

Can't you get under both trucks with a measuring tape and determine how far back the cross member is from the engine or some other point of reference (on both trucks) and compare?

If the cross members are in the same location on both frames, then you'd know you can just swap cross members or bolt up the manual trans to the existing cross member (in the double cab truck).

That was my plan if I didn't get an answer. I don't have access to the parts truck for the next month though so I wanted to plan ahead so that I could have everything figured out when the time came for the swap.

Maybe take the measurements on your double cab, then post them here, and ask for the same measurements from a TW member with Xtra cab 2.7 4WD, MT truck. I'd help take measurements from mine if it weren't V6.

The crossmember is the same. But the automatic is 3" further back than the manual. Also the mounting bracket is different between the crossmember and the transmission.

So let me get this straight. With the v6 you don't have any fab work to do since the crossmembers are in the same spot. Just reuse the manual one.

However on the 2.7 you need to remount the crossmember 3 inches forward and reuse the manual one.

    Did I get this right?
