Idk. I don't think a supercharged 4.0 Would take it out either. It keeps up with a 5.7 tundra

That's the beauty of compact lightweight trucks, may they rest in peace :(

Ok, so what do you like about having a m/t on the 4x4? Having never gone four wheelin', my thoughts are that I would want a m/t to help control the amount of torque when in a tough situation. Just like I would want a m/t in a sports car for more control into and out of a turn..

watch the video I put in my edited post from earlier. 1st gen Tacoma beat a 3rd gen in a drag race, both stock.

Anyway....I forgot what we were supposed to be talking about in this thread? 2016 4x4 auto or manual? Definitely go manual.

I drove a buddy of mine's 2016 Tacoma w/manual and that thing shifted like butter, made my '04 feel like a worn out big rig tranny :pout:

4lo in first gear, first is already really low with the 4.30 rear diff. In 4lo you are crawling with tons of torque around 1-2 mph. Bump starting it when you're in the woods and you leave the music on too long. Driving in neutral with the motor off when you're coming up on game. Never overheating the brakes by compression braking. Atrac is God. Not having the truck shift while in mud or when you broke the tires loose on purpose. Rocking to get unstuck. Quick backup maneuvers, I constantly roll up things in neutral to roll back and turn around without hitting reverse.

The 16 auto is hesitant and slow, it would only shine once those trucks are up to speed. Putting the manual into the engines power band quicker along with the gearing makes it a full second faster to 60. I don't think that auto was a second behind either trucks, do you?

Oh I agree, 1st gen manual only won by a nose...and you have to figure in other variables too, such as vehicle weight, driver response/capability, auto vs manual, etc. You can't really compare a first gen vs. a second or third when it comes to racing because they are literally two different classes of trucks, compact versus mid-size. It's just a fun video is all. The 2nd vs. 3rd gen part of the video is more relevant

1st gear, 4lo, with 4.30 rears IS your crawl control. I thought I had made a mistake with the manual the first time I drove it, it was rough! Let it break in for a day or so and it is really a great transmission paired with a very nice hydraulic clutch. Does it match the shifting my s2000 and Honda Fit? No, but it surely doesn't shift like pop pops old dump truck either. With how easy the clutch is and how low 1st gear is, stop and go traffic is no problem unless your extremely lazy or you have an unfortunate disability.

Manual for the win. Drives so much better. Unfortunately no manual offered in DCLB.

I wish my drive to work were a little longer so I could shift more. I love manuals!

I like having a manual when 4x4'ing primarily for the same reason I like having one in 4x2...it's just more fun. Having full control of my shifting makes me feel more connected to what my truck is doing on and off-road alike.

A 3rd gen Tacoma 4x4 is not 5600 pounds. That's the GVWR, not the empty weight.

If you compared a V6 DC short bed 4x4 auto across all gens the weight difference wouldn't be too much.

1st gens were at 5100 lbs GVWR, 2nd gens were at around 5400-5500 and all 3rd gens are at 5600.

The truck has grown sure, but not drastically.

ah gotcha. I accidentally quoted the curb weight of the 2004 & 2015 Tacomas I looked up, you're right they are a lot closer than I thought.

Yeah gen 1 weight is like 3800 or so and gen 2 and 3 can add 600-700 lbs to that or so.

    Classic Mt owner.
I reiterate the poster above who wrote "all my life (owning my first vehicle since 1969) all I've ever owned and driven has been a manual. Still driving my 3 speed 68 land cruiser. Even had a manual put in my 2011 Outback. Preludes, tacoma s, all manuals.
Now I bought a 16 trd or at, and prolly will never go back to another Mt.
But it's a personal choice, and one that should be made by you yourself weighing the pros and cons of each, and nevermind anyone making statements like ats are crap... men only drive mts, blah blah blah. My at is my daily driver, I drive it off road plenty, and I take long trips towing with it.
Good luck with what ever you decide.
Oh, and incidentally, Frank Zappa was and remains my primary mentor throughout my life. True genius, and great human being. I was crushed when he died so young at 53 in 1993. Long Live FZ.
