The difference is your motor position. I want to say the crossmember is in a different position and the 2.7 trucks moved the transfer case shifter forward into the adapter to compensate.

Toyota wasn’t making different cabs so your cab should be identical to my V6 double cab.

Don't just rely on hearing/feeling the big 3 when seating the TC. Also should be doing this to be 100% sure.

I think at this point since you've already notched into the cab to try and make room, you've kind of commited to it. Now would be the time though to decide if you want to pull it and then tear into both transmissions to get that output shaft swapped. Not going to lie, it definitely is an involved job by the looks of it. If I were to do it, I'd have this sitting on the table (which it is lol).

Yeah, he was told he could swap bell housings. Which might be ok but the rest... not so sure about it.

That was why I mentioned earlier in the thread about sticking with engine size. Transfer case and transmission will definitely be a given. Front diff, steering knuckles obviously not but 100% the 340F and the TC. Spline counts to be sure.

@dunc_werks - I'm not trying to freak you out brother but make sure about this. Last thing you want to do is try to get it back together and have something go south because spline counts are different than what they should be.

ALL good and much appreciated! I’ll look into swapping the output shafts and see what’s involved there. If the trans and transfer case are from the same vehicle, those splines would be matched yes? Cause if I get everything in and it spins, I’m just worrying about driveshafts stuff that point. Lot to re read through and reference from all the previous replies. Not sure what I’ll do exactly at this moment.

The notch is very minuscule and fits under the factory gasket so isn’t a big deal to attach some sheet there.

You know who will probably know... @gearcruncher. Hate to call on him but this dude has the experience that might be able to answer...

OP has a 4cyl, picked up a 6cyl A340F w/transfer case and swapped in his 4cyl bellhousing. His tcase is now sitting further back. He's notched into the floor of his cab to expose the transfer case shifter. Will this work? Any foreseeable issues with Engine/Flexplate/Driveshaft?

Would he be better off swapping output shafts? Not for the faint of heart type of job but both the 4cyl and 6cyl share the same part# for output shafts.

    Thanks Gearcruncher. Cheers!

So from what I'm reading this is where I think the issue is.
OP needs to find a t-case from the 2.7. The v6 t-case has the shifter coming out of the top. The 4banger t-case has the shifter rods coming out the front and they go into the transmission where the shifter will mount.
The v6 motor mounts about 1.5 inch forward of the 4 cylinder. That's the difference in the length.

This one claims to be from a 4cyl, AT w/o ADD.

If he uses a tcase from a 4cyl, wont the spline count be off since its a 6cyl A340F?

Or was it that the tcase didn't matter if it was from a 4 or 6cyl but what DID matter was AT vs MT. The difference in spline count was based on the transmission (again, AT vs. MT). I can't recall specifically.

Hi, I didn't read the rest of the thread so if the answer has already been found, I apologize.

The 4cyl engines are set up with a forward shift transfercase, the j-shift from the v6 is a top shift transfer case and is located about 6 inches back from where a forward shift transfer case would be located. If you used a 4cyl foward shift transfer case your shifter would be in the correct position.

I'm pretty sure the spline on the v6 and 4cylinder a340f are the same. It was the AT vs MT that are different.

Quickest way for me to answer this is here .
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...-4-wheel-drive-or-automatic-to-manual.702733/

The reason I put this thread together is because I got thousands of questions about fitment and I couldnt answer most of them simply because I always fix the transmission that came with the truck . Years and years ago , I use to do swaps , but no longer play that game .
With this being said , I am positive you will find answers in that thread

Here is my transfer case thread . There is a bunch of information lower in the thread regarding 1st gen transfer cases

So uhhhh anyone have a 4x4 trans and J shifter transfer case for a 3RZ? I'm located in Orange County, Southern California.

I've found a few listed with local parts houses I'm going to check out tomorrow. Hopefully source one with a forward shift transfer case. I think the best plan is to just get the correct parts in there and sell / trade both other trans. Interior fit and finish will be correct at that point.

Question. If I were to find a forward shift transfer case. Could I install the shifter from the original transfer case where the top plate is on the 4x4 trans output adapter? ( I need to go check those plates and see if they're the same size )

Give this yard a call. They've proven very helpful and a good source of parts to a few here who have done 4WD swaps. 4cyl, AT transfer case w/o (without) ADD.

Now I understand Tyler's picture. Find yourself a 4cyl transfer case and it will end up looking like this. Pull the blank plate off the back of the transmission, and that is where your tcase shifter will go. -

    upload_2022-11-20_12-31-50.jpg

Here is a not so good example pic from my transmission. You can see the blank cover in front of the tcase shifter. The 4cyl tcase will have that blank in place of the shifter on the 6cyl case and you would remove that blank on the trans to fit the transfer case shifter.

So going to hit up a few wreckers tomorrow. Does anyone know where the 2 inches gets accommodated for in the driveline with the 3RZ sitting 2 inches further back? Is the transfer case or tail housing of the correct 3RZ 4x4 transmission 2 inches less in length? I'm going to take measurements of what I have and reference the prospective parts and mounting locations to clarify. I went ahead and pulled the 6 cyl trans and case for the correct ones.
