Do you think the tail housing/tcase adapter, is the same for the foward shift 4cyl and the v6 one that you have with the blank covering?

If you went with an output shaft swap, you would still have to make sure that that tail housing that bolts to the tcase will accept the tcase shifter and work properly. You need that adaptor piece to be able to bolt your tcase to your original tranny. I think I would be searching for a proper 4cyl transmission and tcase, as others suggest and sell the v6 stuff.

Okay. Hopefully this is the last time I edit this post of mine here. Digging into part numbers, there is a difference. If I were to order a reman from toyota for a 2002, it would be
    350003G110 for a 6cyl and,

    350003G280 for a 4cyl.

This turns out to be a bell housing difference. When we look at internals and pull the input shaft of the transfer case, that input shaft is the same for both 4 and 6 cyl models. So, no difference with a 4 or 6 cyl in that respect.

    @dunc_werks -- if I were in your position, I would -

Find a 4cyl transfer case first. Try that first. Might not need to get a different transmission. TC first. What @GEN1_MK2 said

    Do this:
Good luck. I think the 4cyl tc will work.

Thanks. Am currently in route to pick up a 4cyl trans and case.

Ironically I have already bought the spindles, locking hubs, cv’s, and 4.56 front diff off this parts truck.

I did take a look at the top plates on the trans and case, they’re a different profile so swapping a shifter is a no go. Also the driveshafts I have need that 2 inch forward movement to fit. So 4cyl trans and case it is.

refresh and take another look at my post. I edited it again lol. The 6cyl trans should be fine. Whatever works for you though. Keep us posted. You'll get there.

Thanks. I’ll give it a look when I’m there and assess. I have my trans and case with me for cross reference.

    Today was eventful.

I still need new driveshafts. The ones I bought previously were go figure from a 6cyl.

Awesome! Congrats! So with the drive shafts, as long as its not from a MT, you should be good to go. When I was looking at part#s for the front of the rear ds they were the same between both 4 and 6cyl. The difference was with MT and AT driveshafts.

I went the route of aftermarket because I could not find a suitable 4WD rear ds. What did I end up doing? Dropping off my prerunner stock ds and have it shortened. This aftermarket is going back into a box.

I sourced a shorter front section for the rear driveshaft from the same breaker I got the trans and case from this morning. I'll see how well it fits tonight or tomorrow. Ordered a fresh carrier bearing for it too. Hoping it all fits now.. Should be in the ballpark.

Go figure the front driveshaft I had acquired with the wrong transmission was for a manual truck. All good - I reached out to http://www.drivelinesinc.com/ in south OC and turns out they do house calls. So going to have them come out and measure to extend the front driveshaft, balance my rears as well.

FWIW, 3rd Gen 4Runner front drivelines work for these trucks too. They aren’t quite different like the rears are. I’m running a 3rd Gen 4Runner front driveline and differential on my truck.

Alright lads. I’ve got it all installed. Filled it up with fluid to start it up. Upon start up I got some pretty bad screeching rotational noises that slightly dissipated after 5 seconds but remained constant. I put it through the gears and it didn’t go away and was audibly different when going back into park.

transfer case is in neutral and driveshafts are still off.

any thoughts / real time help here?

could it be the pump inside the transmission cavitating or a flex plate issues?

    thank you.

That’s exactly what happened to me. The transfer case will grind unless there are drivelines connected. I don’t recall if it does that in neutral however.

I believe it’s something to do with the transfer case having no resistance. Once I installed the drivelines I had no issue.

Did you make sure to seat the torque converter completely and verify before installing the trans?
What about the flex plate to torque converter bolts? Did you make sure to start with the black one FIRST?

The depth note post happened after I had it installed. I did get the converter spun on and seated on the bottom layer. I was sure it was on, but yes a measurement would of verified that.

As far as the black bolt goes I was unaware of that. I think I’ll pull the bolts and re torque them to see if that alleviates this. And if that doesn’t work reassess (torque converter depth).

I did pull the torque converter cover off and rotated the engine by hand just now. There is a slight metallic ticking noise coming from that area, I would describe it as the screeching noise if it was to be sped up to engine speed.

Ugh. Crossing fingers for ya. My OCD would be driving me crazy if I didn't pull it, re-seat the TC/measure and then bolt everything back up. No shortcuts.

Update when you can. Hoping you can resolve this easily. :fingerscrossed:
