I can't seem to find a thread on the RWD to 4WD conversion guide with images. I'm upside down on my truck so no, I won't trade it in for a new one. (2010 prerunner v6 with 6 ft bed.) thanks in advance.

You will probably spend a whole lot more converting it that what you are upside down on it, plus more.

To answer your question. I have yet to see one, or have yet read about some regular joe like you and me go through this ordeal. I imagine it would be very time consuming, and very VERY expensive.

If I remember correctly, all you need is an fj transfer case, the front end parts, and the drive selector switch, but I'm just looking for a guide with images. If I recall, it's actually not too difficult of a mod. Plus it would cost less than 6 grand sooo...

One of the best sources you'll get are the articles on Rock Solid Toys website. Theres some builds around TW for inspiration, but I dont recall any step by step guides...

Given enough time and money most anything is possible. But you're already underwater. Going even further under on a 10 year old truck isn't a good move in my opinion.

Bad luck happens. If you're sitting at a traffic light minding your own business and get rear ended by someone who totals your truck the insurance company will pay you the value of your Pre-Runner. You'll still have to come up with the additional money to pay it off and lose everything you put into modifying it.

Either you over paid for the prerunner or rolled over debt from the other car you couldnt afford into this one and now your wannA drop 6k into conversion. Horrible idea. Take that 6k and put all on the car note so you’re not upside down.

The factory Tacoma 4 wheel drive system has many flaws and all of those flaws can be omitted (if desired) by converting a 2wd.

A converted 2wd has less parts and is therefore more reliable than factory if intelligently converted.

Gears, lockers, trusses, dampners, powder coat, axle rebuilding, and suspension parts picked out all come into play when figuring out costs and it's only as expensive as you make it.

If you want you can always add extra insurance coverage, they'll take your money and damn near cover anything that you proved you had BEFORE it was stolen/wrecked.

If you want to install fog lights and want to learn how to do small tasks an instruction sheet is nice to have. If you're converting a 2wd into a 4wd and needing a step by step instruction sheet then you might want to consider farming the job out (IMO).

A lot of average Joe’s have done it. It’s not that hard and really not all that expensive.

I'm looking at a high pinion front axle, it has reverse rotation gears, I think all high pinion axles do but idk, question is does the driveshaft turn the opposite direction too on a reverse rotation diff or are reverse rotation and standard rotation diffs interchangeable?

Reverse rotation is a stupid term. Everything turns the same direction. There's just high pinion and low pinion. High pinion front axles are stronger because the force is on the drive side of the ring gear when driving forward. Low pinion front axles drive on the coast side of the ring gear when going forward. The coast side is angled a lot which is trying to push the ring and pinion away from each other. That's just the way hypoid gears are. FWIW, 2nd gen Tacos are high pinion. In solid axle stuff, it's primarily Ford, Jeep Wrangler, and some Dodges.

Little this. Little that 4x4 Swap’d PreRunner
I’m at 3k with a regear, front arb, and a custom fabbed shifter from RST. All in I’ll probably be around 5k, new tires included.
There’s a few key threads I‘ll edit and add tomorrow.
I’ve seen guys do a whole swap for 2k. You just gotta shop around good. Wait for deals.

    edit:

there’s some here. Can’t find some of the others I’ve used, but this one links a few.

I did an auto 4x4 to manual 4x4 on my 09. I had about 1000 into it for parts and my labor. 2wd to 4x has challenges of its own including the illusive trans mount that’s farther back on the 4wds then the prerunners.

Lmao I'm just trying to do something bc I want to do it. I don't need a step by step but I remember seeing one here a while back so it would be good to see what parts others have used.

I have gap insurance so all I'm at risk for is what I put into it. Regardless, it's something I want to do. I don't really care about the Financials of it.
