Going to start slowly collecting parts for the swap. No solid axle or anything just 4x4 IFs. I have a 2001 DoubleCab Automatic V6. Ive got a couple questions though before I start. ttorra may be a better spot to ask but I figured I'd try here first since I'm a member. Any help would be appreciated.

1.What year range tacoma and 4runner will work for the transmission and transfer case? I will probably end up using 4 runner parts as they seem to be easier to find.

    2. Can i use the transmission out of a 2.7 or does it have to be the V6? I have heard conflicting answers.

    Steps for 4x4 swap:

    1) Trade prerunner in on a 4x4.
    2) Done.

I agree with the above. The cost of labor and parts is more than what you loose on a trade in. Have you looked into an arb locker? You will be surprised what a locked 2wd can go through

I completed a 4wd swap on my 01 double cab V6. I found a transmission/transfer case from a 97 4Runner for $350, free 4.10 front diff, complete manual hub setup with spindles, CV's, hubs for $300, front portion of a rear driveshaft from a 4wd model for $100 and front driveshaft for $100. Add in some replacement parts for ~$300 like ball joints, a u-joint, driveshaft balancing, manual hub seals, studs etc. After selling my prerunner transmission for $350, I think I completed the swap for under $1000. Factoring in how much I paid for the truck and how much cheaper insurance is, I'd say it's a worthwhile swap to do.

If you are a DIY kinda person, I say go for it. It was a bit of work and had I known about different dipstick lengths between the 2wd and 4wd transmissions, I would have been driving the truck a couple days after tearing it apart and I did all the work myself.

It makes the swap easier if you install all manual parts; hubs and transfer case. That way you aren't messing with wiring up the ADD system (which isn't that hard either). Any V6 auto transmission (A340F) will work in your truck whether it be from a 96 4runner or a 02 Tacoma, just make sure you get a transmission with a kickdown cable, not an electronic one. All mechanical kickdown cables came on 96-02 transmissions, 03-04 transmissions have an electronic kickdown cable and it won't work in your truck without tearing the entire transmission apart.

Bingo! A few folks have done it for 1000 bucks or less. Some pay a little more, and go SAC, or get some lockers, etc.

Just shop around for good deals and look for people parting out vehicles. Post wanted ads for what you need (usually little stuff or anything really). It may take longer to complete but you'll have spent less money on the swap. Don't forget little stuff like bolts that hold the front diff in place or the proper dipstick for the tranny, be very thorough and think of EVERYTHING. Hell, picking up a FSM and looking at diagrams would help a lot too.
