Ya I don't know if its a hindrance. You have to be conscious of it. Way too many people feel the back slip, flip the switch and think they're invincible. But if you aren't ready for the change in vehicle handling. You've only made it worse.

But I'm aware of how a 4x4 will react and don't think I'm invincible because of 4WD so I stand by my " No " answer

Would you agree it decreases the likelihood of oversteer?

Nope not a lot of snow here, but when we do get the winter precip it mostly comes as ice wich is a lot of times worse than snow. Also, just cause you see my CURRENT state of residency, that does not tell you anything aboht where I have lived in the past 38 years of my life. You know what hapoens whe. You ASSUME something right?

But not the same , snow provides at least some level of traction whereas ice does not , apples and oranges

Don't forget pears and grapes and all the other possibilities.

Snow can be two feet deep and fluffy. Or it can be 1cm and thick so that it becomes ice or worse than upon the slightest pressure...

I suppose we are all speaking to the conditions we see and will never agree. Probably because there is no single answer..

That said. Fuck you guys. I'm right!

First off being a good winter driver requires experience and skills, regardless of 2wd or 4wd. With that said I can tell you that I have put over 100,000 miles on several yotas in 4WD. Living in interior Alaska slick roads start in September and don't go away til April. I pretty much left every vehicle I owned in 4wd most of the winter.(with a few exceptions when we had warm spells) Didn't matter if I was driving 10 mph because of lack of visibility and 12" of snow or running 75 down the highway. This applies to pre taco, 96 and 99 tacos, a T-100 and a 05 4Runner and a 07 Tundra. There is nothing worse in the world than thinking that because you are driving in a straight line that the road wont grab your ass end and throw it to one side or the other. I am also a fireman and can tell you that I have seen many a vehicle accidents at low speeds and high speeds and the famous saying is always....."I thought the road was dry so I was in 2wd" from the owner of a 4wd truck. Do what you want but IME if theres any doubt to the condition of a winter road (especially in the dark) 4WD it is!!!! I'll add that the intro of traction control/VSC/etc requires a learning curve from models that don't have those systems. I couldn't even take off with my Tundra unless I was in 4wd because of the VSC.

I've always wondered, do fire trucks have 4x4 modes? I know some of the off highway versions do but the usual ones we see at the station?

Yes our engines were 4wd. We also ran studded tires on some of the engines. There's not much thats 2wd in interior Alaska
