First off if you are stupid enough to drive at freeway speeds with it in 4wd then you deserve to have crap like this happen.

The dumb ass was driving 70 mph

Moral of the story if you are a common senseless person then read the story.

 

The problem is that's exactly what some on this thread (yourself included) are advising other's to do...

 

You can drive at high speed in 4WD , where does Toyota state that you cannot ?

 

I believe they include the word "slippage" though.

Yes... of coarse you can drive at highway speeds in 4wd... but it's advised to do so when 4wd is needed (for greater traction than 2wd (like when you experience a loss of power, such as wheel spinning.) 2wd is meant for normal driving on dry hard surfaced roads. No where in the owners manual (at least mine) does it say it's ok to drive in 4wd at ANY speed on dry pavement. Does your manual state othewise?

I didn't say anything about road conditions , I was pointing out that there is no caveat against higher speeds in 4WD

I never use 4wd High

...and I've already shared my opinion of when it's appropriate to use 4HI / 4LO

 

Bottom line is, its your truck. Do whatever you want with it. OP. My advice, if there's binding. Turn off 4WD.

I use 4WD when I need it, and occasionally in the summer to lube things up. Most of the time when there's no snow, I don't and plain just forget to turn it on for lube purposes. It's my opinion that its not good to drive with it in 4WD on dry pavement, so guess what? I don't. And no one can make me!

 

Please link where I advised someone to drive 70 mph while in 4x4? oh can't find it then shut it.

 

Me thinks 10 miles a month is excessive. How about a 1/4 mile? Dry pavement going straight no problem, Hi/Lo range no biggie, 2-5 mph ought to stir the lube a bit. Once maybe twice a year.
Dirt and gravel roads aplenty around my location so maybe a few/1/2 dozen times a summer depending on fishing/camping, mine gets engaged more frequently.
Would occasionally lock rear diff. for function check too.
Just my 2 cents worth.

 

Your right YouTard... you said 60 mph not 70... but went on to say "if your stupid enough to drive at freeway speeds with it in 4wd then you deserve to have crap like that happen". I don't know how it is where you live but around here 60-70 mph are freeway speeds.

 

Well here in Utah where all the Utards live we have freeway speeds up to 85 mpg


And if you look at the photo you will see something that is right in front of your face every time you get in your truck

 

I don't know why you would own a 4x4 if you didn't have places nearby to use it. I think "regular maintenance" is a good excuse to take a scenic drive on a dirt road every now and then.

 

Just to let you know... "freeway speeds" in the U.S. range between 60-85 mph.
