I switched out my gears to a precison 4.88 gear set and at the time I could have gotten a locker put in for a really good deal since they were going to be working on the rear end of my truck anyways. I do like how I can corner hard as F!@# in my truck and not lose it though in my LSD.

If my LSD ever fails me I will swap it out quick!

just my input.. but with lots of hard off road driving under my belt.. Auto LSD, mechanical LSD and open diff. are all the same when it comes down to it. Like that one guy said a few replies back.. there is no substitute for a locker. On road though there is a world of difference for open diff. to a Mechanical LSD system.

put a locker up front and keep the limited slip in the back. then you get both

Ice was one of my big concerns for a 4x4, I wouldnt get 15 feet past my driveway in the winter without 4x4, well thats not true if I started sliding down the big hill I live on I could probably get like 50 yards to be stopped by a tree!

huh? maybe on some weak poorly designed over weight pigs (read any ford or gm with IFS) they are bad idea due to breakage...but on a taco they are fine except for hardcore wheelers...and they dont have IFS anymore by that point

or if your like me who does pretty severe driving and keeps breaking front axles and im only on 31's. its the only truck that i have ever broke an axle on. My TTB f250 never broke and it was on 315x75's. my lil truck is way more fun though.. and 70 bucks every couple month or so isnt so bad. the left front is clicking about to go out now actually.

For the wheeling I do (sand, mud, whatever), my locked PreRunner is extremely efficient. I just use common sense.

Though I have been looking at trading it for a Doublecab 4x4. Mainly for the backseat, but if I was gonna do it over again I might as well wait for a good deal on a 4x4. I got my PreRunner in mint condition for dirt cheap so I am very happy with it.

ttb isnt ifs lol I have a ttb 94 ranger which is basically a dana 35 front ... I have broken an axle before but it was full throttle in snow on hill and tire caught a nice big rock under snow and stopped LOL + i did say except hardcore wheelers...so your severe driving should come into that

"The TTB (Twin Traction Beam) was Ford's first stab at an IFS (independent
front suspension) system for 4x4 trucks. It was originally designed for
full-size trucks, but a smaller version was later developed for the Bronco
    II/Ranger/Explorer vehicles."

lol, i will not be lied too!!!

HMM, the question is why would you buy a prerunner with a locker, when you could buy the 4x4 with open diff in the back for like the same price? Or atleasat those were the thoughts going through my head 3 months ago while I was deciding which truck to buy! But 4x2 sux big time on ice, especially on steep hills, only way Im gettin up these puppys in the winter with 4x2 is to go up the hill ass backwards!

Because I paid $17,200 for my locked PreRunner with only 28K miles an in MINT condition. There are no 4x4s within 300miles of me with that low miles under $20K, I would know because I look on a daily basis (I might trade to a 4x4 Double Cab).

really Im from canada, and for some reasons prices here for tacomas in paticular are really messed and varied as far as used vehicles go! I was all over the map untill I found my 2.7 l 4 cyl 4x4 reg cab with 30,000 miles for $14,000 canadian! to that look at the retail price of a taco in the states and compare the same truck to the candian retail and it is some sort of insane difference considering our competeing dollar!

There is never any substitute for 4x4. Open diffs, front and rear, will out perform a locked 4x2 on any surface. In any country!

This is true that is why i got rid of my 06 Tundra 4x2 for a 06 Taco 4x4 dc. That sugar sand will eat a truck quick. Been there.

4x4 owners are always flaming people with 2WD, like "How dare you compare your worthless 2WD to the royalty of my superior 4x4 "

If you are a skier, a 4x2 truck would not even be a consideration. On a powder morning it is the difference between face shots or staying in bed dreaming of face shots. Or of making it to the parking lot or ending up in a ditch.

im not saying a prerunner couldnt go on some of the trails ive been on...im sure they could...however...being able to crawl thru some of the trails has done me a world of good in preventing body damage and breakage
