Yeah it's all kind of moot till I have a successful build documented to reference. The 3.4 turbo is pretty decent power and it gets good mpg. I think I could safely extract the amount of power I'd be content with from it without having to upgrade the bottom end. My reasoning is ultimately I'd like to be in a quad cab and I'd love to stuff a manual trans in so I figure I may as well plot a v8 in as well while I'm pulling stuff out and just make a whole project out of it . I think you're right about the 5.3, it'll be better suited to turn a larger set of tires while keeping the rpms down.

4.8's seem to be a few bills cheaper on average, 5.3 is still on the cheap end of the spectrum though IMO. I think it would be cheaper to find a hammered 4-door and swap a motor than a healthy one and turbo it.

yea the 4.8 is gonna be fine in our trucks. Just takes a tiny more skinny pedal..but not much difference.

The motor im finding is the cheap part. its the rest that is expensive. an NV4500 after you have fixed some of the know issues is a 1200-2000 tranny..then a Tcase is another 1000-3000 depending on your option.

I wouldn't keep the r150 and taco tcase with 450hp going through it. Just asking for problems. With a turbo you'd be looking at 450-650hp too. Would want a full size rear axle at that point for a 9'' diff and swap in an 8'' front diff probably. If and when Front Range Offroad comes out with that.

    Not a cheap endeavor..

Makes doing a 2jz swap seem cheaper at times.

I stumbled upon a place local that does 5.3 turn key swaps into jeeps for $10,000. Engine and trans. Gives me hope that it's not terribly expensive.

    10k..is expensive haha

All of this is based of light research. Haven't purused local junk yards yet but don't have my hopes up.

Be 3-6k swap either way im pretty sure.

We are doing a very unique exhaust setup so that we have zero issues with the headers. We are going to build the driver side to come around the front of the engine down low, and go into a collector down low to keep the heat as little as possible. It will then flow into the passenger side of the exhaust. Doing it this way will cause zero fitment issues. I will post pictures as we go. They would most likely clear if we did a standard setup and go down the side of the engine but doing this will allow much more clearance. Plus we like to build stuff that is unique and different from what every one else does.

ah. Ive seen this done for turbo setups.

Well cool. Was hoping you'd tackle them normal to see if it was doable without fully custom headers. But that'll work!

Exactly, we want all the room we can get for all the power steering lines, fuel lines etc.

It's not cheap but sounds reasonable. I've seen numbers around 6 typically for do it yourself which sounds like a bargain to me considering the cost of alternative power modifications. I've seen blown or high mileage double cabs go for under $4000 so you're looking at $10-12000 all said and done compared to people asking up to and over $15000 for their not low miles DC's.

if youre finding 1st gen DC for under 4000 that are 4wd...thats a miracle.

I don't have that kinda money to throw around but if you do would indeed be a fun project.

Im curious as to why you didn't think to just push the whole motor forward as you moved the entire radiator out and no fan there either..

Seems if you did that with the 2-3'' you'd gain you may be able to clear stuff.

We just didnt want it that far forward. Its exactly where we want it. If it was more forward there would be not enough room for the exhaust to come around front, electric fan on condenser, coolant lines, etc

Well i know there wouldn't be enough room for the exhaust around the front..

But Im saying, why didn't you push the motor forward to run the exhaust out the back..like normal.

It looks like you have tons of room to do that and you wouldn't need a big fan for the AC and the coolant lines can't take up that much space.

Just curious..seems like it would work out good that way and be a lot easier and cleaner install personally. It literally just occurred to me while i was looking at your photos of the engine bay.

Not to be rude, do your truck however you want, we are building the truck how WE want it and how we know it will work.
