No need to be a dick dude...there are restrictions to using 4wd that someone who's new to it might not know or understand.

It freaked me out, I thought I broke my new truck haha even out of reaction I pressed the break a little. It's definitely a nifty feature.

Yeah it does look neat, at first I was against it thinking it took all the fun out of knowing how to off-road properly, but everyone gets stuck no matter how good you are. I admit I kind of wish I had it after seeing some videos of it in action.

Is there any disadvantages to it? Im just trying to understand why not just do away with 4hi and just have full time awd as an option instead for all 4x4 vehicles, is there a reason thats not a popular thing to do?

The vehicle needs a locking center differential to make this work. Added cost and complexity, it's never caught on but it would be the ultimate. I don't feel it's really necessary, you can use our 4wd on rain slick roads.

GM made some full time 4wd vehicles in the 1970s that had ratchets on the front wheels, 4wd didn't work in reverse. I don't believe I need to comment on the idiocy of this idea.

My best guess is that 4lo is still a necessity in some situations, both recreational and otherwise. And 4lo with it's super low gearing in front can't be used on paved/dry surfaces.

For instance, that's what would give our trucks the advantage over full time 4x4 or AWD vehicles like a Subaru in situations where the low gearing is necessary, they wouldn't be equipped with it like our trucks are.

It can be in a straight line, but definitely not recommended.

I live in Canada. I use 4WH in the winter on slick roads, light or heavy wheeling on back logging roads in the summer, and when I have to recover (pull) a stranded vehicle I put it in 4L in low 2/1.

I turn it off and on as I need it. Don't overthink this.

True...it's not recommended to use it on paved roads but if you're in a straight line you're not going to hurt anything. I've finished trails before and hopped back onto the main road for a few seconds before realizing I forgot to switch it back into 2wd, hasn't caused me any problems. I do remember a few months ago there was a thread on here from someone that had their truck in 4hi while cruising around the city and broke something, I can't remember what it was exactly but he learned an expensive lesson.

How will I know if I binded something or caused damage? I did the same thing and forgot to turn my 4hi after wheeling and went on paved road for a bit and noticed I was still in 4wd after turning. Everything seems to be fine just don't know if I caused something that will damage later on.

I'm sure you're fine. If you damaged something due to binding I'm betting you would know it, there would be some less than pleasant sounds happening at the very least. If turning on a paved road were as dangerous as it's sometimes made out to be then turning on a dirt road would also be considered risky. The truth is that it isn't, it's just advisable that you avoid doing it. The thread I was referring to before the guy had been driving around for awhile in 4hi on pavement.

if everything is working as it should then I wouldn't worry over it
