Good evenin everyone, Lord willin you're havin a nice Christmas Eve whether at home or on duty.
When I engage 4wd (hi), there's a thumping/metal clanging noise; happens in 1st & 2nd gear, and sometimes reverse. And especially when turning into a parking space. This happens only when I'm in 4-Hi. (1st Gen Tacoma; 2.7 manual trans)

I appreciate any and all info you can suggest. No rush.
    Thank You!

Do you run your transmission on a regular basis? How many miles are on it?

turning and 4x4 anything is a no-no. not a big no-no, just a no-no.you can damage something that way. other than that, a clunking noise while engaging is kinda normal.

when you engage 4x4 hi or lo, is the clutch fully depressed? or do you just gun-ho it while moving?

shifting is fine, both in and out of 4wd. The noise is usually in the first few seconds of 1st gear (from a stop to about 20mph), then all through 2nd, but not every time I drive. It's sporadic.

huh..... sounds like it has something to do with rubber. whether it be a boot for the cv axle, or a mount or driveshaft support. check their conditions i guess or try and get a recording of the noise as best you can.
