4x4 not engageing

    2001 tacoma 4x4 5 speed stock
    what would be the first thing I should check, the transmission does gear down in low but the front wheels do not engage. the same with 4 high, it worked fine last week.
    Thanks for any direction anyone can give me

    3in revtec lisf westin step bars and westin bull bar and some other odds and ends
    be sure and push ur clutch all the way to the floor and somtimes it help to take off very slow when going to 4h.
