its a truck, i wanted mine to be as capable as possible so v6 and 4x4. Ive had 2wd trucks and while never stuck i could have easily been SOL in alot of places if not for momentum

4X4 makes sense to me. I’m typically of the mind that it’s better to have it in case. Even if you don’t think you need it now, you may in the future.

I hear of people that regret getting a 2 wheel drive but have never heard someone say they regret getting the 4X4.

If you keep it 5 years or more the fuel savings of 2wd will easily pay a tow bill and from living in the south I can say the difference between the value of 2wd and 4wd 5 years down the road won't be any more difference than it is new so the thing about 4wd holding value better is a wash imo.

I only got a 4wd because had to to get the manual trans, if I could got the trans with 2wd I would have just to save the fuel as I don't ever really use the 4wd anyway so you have now met the exception

That is a very fair point, definitely. When I say resale I am also referencing two things. First, I think the resale value of Tacomas will rise over the next several years for a host of reasons (limited product, low mileage due to people driving less now, etc. all nudging resale values upwards -- how much is impossible to predict but not unreasonable to assume). But I should also add that since most people are looking for 4WD there is a larger market and the truck will likely be in higher demand. So in this case resale also includes churn / time to sell.

But you are probably right ... it will be closer to even than one would think. Of course, I am not one of these people obsessed about resale. I buy the truck, use and an enjoy it and then worry about what it is worth down the road. I'd rather live with what I have than worry about how much it will be worth when I am done. :)

If you run into mud when your driving backroads then 4x4 could come in handy.

understand bro and definately a 2wd is hard to sell say in NY but in GA where I live about half the new trucks on the lots are 2wd and they aren't any harder to sell here

Not only do I not have 4wd, I don't even have 6 lugnuts.

But I have no need for either one. My truck does everything I want it to.

And that's what you have to decide. What do you want it to do?

I went to an off road park this weekend in Austin, TX

I was in 2WD the whole time on gravel trails and even with rocky hills and light mud

I ONLY needed 4WD when I went to tackle another small trail that later ended up getting battle scar

I probably never need 4WD if I only go where there's 0 chance of messing up anything.
Now in hindsight, my idea tacoma would be 6MT V6 2WD,
    less things to maintain
do not have to do monthly 4WD engagement, and
unfortunately Toyota doesn't make any 2WD MT

4x4. The thought of a 2wd truck makes me sick

    Stock for now.. maybe
Really? 4 min 45 seconds of a bit of work worth 4wd... i get what you are saying but the OP is asking if its worth it.
In Southern Texas id say (unless they are driving into ditches alot, hopefully not) stay with 4x2

I always think in terms of resale.

The best tacoma resale is always, TRD double cab 4x4. You can pick the rest.

If you never leave your area then sure get the 2WD. But if you ever want to explore or go on some adventures (which the taco does really well) or come check out Colorado (which Texans do really well) get the 4WD!

If you even have to ask then you don’t need a 4x4

    It's a secret
Other than initial price difference, the maintenance/repair costs associated with 4x4 transmissions and transfer cases is more $ than 4x2 if anything goes wrong involving the drive train.

Watch some youtube videos of Matt's Offroad recovery. Almost every time you see a truck stuck on there, it's a 2wd one.
