Here in the balmy South (it did snow once this year! Didn't stick, but it was snow dammit!) it's debatable depending on how much off-roading you want to do. I know if we were to move to Canada (brrr! :D) first step after finding a place to live would be trading in mine for a 4x4.

I don't know how it is up there, but here in buffalo area the state department's really good at getting highways clear by about 7 am so if you plan to drive during the day 4wd really isn't needed. I work for my town, so when I get called into work the roads aren't plowed cuz that's what I do so I opted for 4wd. Also, traction control's terrible in the snow. I pull my abs fuses every winter to disable it. Everyone who's ever driven a 2wd truck in winter should know you need a little bit of wheel spin to get up a grade in snow. Well with traction control it activates the rear abs when your wheels spin so you can't move anywhere and burns up your clutch (if you have a standard like me) there's a button to turn it off, but it turns itself back on over like 15 mph or something like that. So don't rely on traction control helping you at all next winter. Another thing to keep in mind is, atleast where I am, 4wd trucks hold their resale value better that 2wd ones. When i bought my truck brand new last February it was 40-some dollars a month for 5 years more to get a base 4cyl 5sp with 4wd compared to a 2wd, and for that money it's nice being prepared for anything. IMO, a 4wd is the way to go.

FYI , sounds like you are just pushing the button to disable VSC , that will allow it to come back on over approx 20 MPH , if you push and hold the button for 3-5 seconds while at a stop , that will disable the VSC and it will not come back on till you push the button again or turn off the truck

I live in PA and just bought prerunner. Our winters aren't that bad and I couldn't justify the extra money for something I would use less than a dozen times. I don't do any off roading either.

I vote for 4x4. Here in Alberta atleast, 9 out of 10 trucks are 4x4, so 4x2 trucks have a bad resale value these days if that matters to you. Of course you can get by with a 2wd, but you will get stuck from time to time and will have to shovel your way out or get a push... I've been there with my 2wd F150. Definitely not fun. If you get 2wd, get some winter tires and have some weight in the bed.

4*4 if you can afford the few thousand. Resale will be better too.

yeah maintenace and gas costs are that much greater in 4x4 compared to Prerunner.
    4x4 FTW!

4x4... the handful of times you NEED it, you will smile when you flick it on. As mentioned before, the 2WD is not front wheel drive, which stinks in slick conditions. 4x4 totally worth it IMHO, and you might just catch yourself going off-road, ON PURPOSE.

That does depend on where you are, and that has been the conventional wisdom for a long time.

I did a comparison using KBB.com for resale values a few years back when gas was $3.75 and that doesn't seem to be a cut and dry truth. At that time the prerunner had the highest resale, followed by 5-lug, and V6 4x4 had the worst.

I know everyone here absolutely needs a pickup truck, but across the rest of the country more posuers that never needed a truck bail like they did last time.

I was in Germany last week and didn't see a single pickup truck, 4wd or 2wd.

But I did drive a Porsche Panamera Diesel legally at 152 mph. :dancingbacon:

I haven't lived in heavy snow areas and spend far more time on the road than off, but have never been able to justify not getting 4x4. Get a car or crossover if you want 4x2. The gas mileage would be better.

i opted for 4x4 over power windows and locks, and am always happy i did.
sometimes, when i lock my keys in the truck, or dont have the sliding window in back its kind of an inconvenience. But when i can just turn that dial, and cruise around in 8 inches of snow, or up a hill in freezing rain while everyone else is in a ditch, i know i made the right decision.
And i know you will too.
    4x4 doitdoit..nononono...doit..doit

This is a good one, I enjoy it every time, Aaaa, what do I want? a 4x4 auto Tran. or a
4x2 stick. By the way, in my neck of the woods winters have lots of snow.
How about put it this way: what do you guys think? it is worth the extra $ 5,000.00
    or so for the trouble.
