I'm looking at getting a 1st gen Tundra (05 or 06) after the holidays. I feel based on how I use my Tacoma 4x4 now (Basically forest roads for camping), I really dont need 4wd. I feel that both the Tacoma and the Tundra are capable with just 2wd.
I'm thinking in terms of gas mileage with the Tundra V8.
Give me your thoughts and opinions gentlemen. All are welcome.
    Thanks.

I would go with a 4x4. Soaking wet forest roads can get very slick and IMO its better to have it just in case rather than getting stuck because your 2wd.

If you are sure you will never need it and not concerned about resale then sure.

But I will never own a 2wd vehicle if there is a 4wd option.

If fuel mileage is your only reason for a 2wd vs a 4x4 is mileage, maybe you should not be buying a older v8 truck.

There is no difference in fuel mileage as long as everything else is the same. Start lifting and adding oversize tires and fuel mileage will take a hit on a 4X4 or 4X2. My brother has a 4X4 2006 Tundra and gets 19 mpg hwy. Same as my Tacoma and the same as my 2014 F-150 4X4.

Cost in the long term is the same. You'll pay more up front for 4X4, but get more later when you sell or trade.

I've bought my 1st 4X4 in 1976. Got married in 1983 and needed a better truck instead of a 4X4 beater and decided to go 4X2 in order to get a little nicer truck for the same money. I hated it for 2 years until I could afford to go back to a 4X4 in 1985. Never considered a 4X2 after that. This I can almost guarantee. Even if you've not needed 4X4 in 2-3 years, as soon as you trade for a 4X2 you'll need it within 2-3 months.

I don't beat mine up playing off road. But spend time on forest service roads and some farm roads. 4X4 saved my butt twice just 2 weeks ago on forest service roads. The roads had gone through several freeze/thaw cycles with a lot of traffic. They were pretty slick when I met a guy with a 4X2 truck that should have never been there. He only wanted 1/2 the road, the middle half. As a result I had to move over closer to the shoulder to pass than normal and slid into the ditch. Since I was already in 4X4 it only took a few seconds to get out.

I don't need 4x4 much either man, but I got it because I know it will be worth way more than a 2wd even after many years. I have had to use it a couple times though and it was really nice having it. A 4x4 will always be highly sought after if you ever decide to sell. Not so much with 2wd.

Yeah I guess you are all right....knowing I have it in the Tacoma gives a certain peace of mind. Why I wouldn't want that in the Tundra is beyond me...I think you all have made up my mind for me!
    Thanks for the input.

Do what works best for you man don't let us make the decision for you. 2wd trucks are very capable and practical vehicles. Just make sure the deal is right

Go with 4wd!! I have a 2wd and love it, but there are times I wish I went with 4wd. There are places you just cant go with 2wd and its a piece of mind thing as well if you get a 4wd. Even if you never use 4wd (which i doubt) you will be happy you have it.

If you need 4x4 to go over dirt roads to camping spots then you need to learn how to drive

    Again.

Better to have and not need, then to need and not have.

Similar to taking a hot chick out on a date. Date goes great, and she wants to bang. You didn’t bring a love glove because you’ve never needed it with chicks in the past because they were desperate, but this chick is Fine AF and won’t fuck with out one. Now you are stuck with blueballs and needing a cold shower while you drive home wishing you would have brought the right equipment with you.
