Unless you are in southern oregon or the passes, Oregonians usually close schools and declare storm watch at 3 inches. No, I'm not kidding. We typically see 1.6 inches or less, with less than 4 snowy days a year.

I drove my little car for 4 years in southern oregon and managed to commute through Willamette Pass each year with no incident - I just made sure that I didn't try the commute during the start of snowfalls, and made sure the plows had gone through.

Portland's deepest snow was 15 inches, reported in February 1950 and once again in 1993. By 2036, the OP is probably going to drive a flying cadillac. ;)

    ^This.

Definitely 4x4...for peace of mind when you are doing the 1% of driving where you'll need it.

To the OP: I have a 4x4 and I can usually go anywhere i want in 2wd and i do alot of hunting/ fishing/ driving in snow and camping in remote areas. Yea i have the comfort of knowing i have 4x4 but it sounds like you are looking at this economically and for your uses the prerunner with a locker would be your best choice..just my .02

With some decent driving skills and planning you can go alot of places in 2wd.

I live in Seattle where we get snow once a year. Love having 4X4. Even for that one late night drive home. It's a lot easier to resell a 4x4 too. Might get some of your money back when it comes time for a new truck. My .02
