I am looking at a Taco but there are my options what do you think?

    SR5 with 4x4
    or
    2WD TRD Off Road?

I am wondering if is worth it to pay more for the off road package without the 4x4 capabilities.

Alright. My choices would go in this order.

    1. TRD OR 4x4
    2. SR5 4x4
    3. TRD OR 4x2

Few things to think about though:

You could buy an SR5 4x4 and add an ARB air locker and compressor for less than the 4k difference (depends on amount of work you want to do).
I had a 4x4 TRD Sport and never felt the need for a locker. I didn't wheel hard enough for one but they are amazing if you get stuck.
I did however, use 4wd all the time. Snow, dirt, etc...

The locker comes in handy when your off-roading and get struck somewhere. Imo if you don't need a truck right now. Wait for the Trd pro. I'm going to hopefully order mine When I can the Trd pro or 4x4

How are you planning on using it. Off road vehicle, daily driver, both?

The only problem with buying and installing a air locker is your have to fight for the warranty. I was going to buy a third gen and lift it rim coilovers and everything but they told me it would void the warranty you just have to fight it

No it only voids the warranty for the part you replace. For example, if you replace the suspension, the dealership no longer covers suspension. However, normally you can get some kind of warranty from whatever company you purchase suspension from.

It is United States law that modifying a vehicle not void the warranty for non modified parts.

TRD OR 4x4 if I had the money
SR5 4x4 is the next best thing
TRD OR 2x4 is just insulting.

I just traded a 2007 TRD 2WD for 2016 TRD 4WD. At the time I bought the first I lived in Oklahoma and it didn't really matter that I didn't have 4WD. I rarely missed it. However, after I moved to Colorado I needed it desperately. Between the snow and mountains the truck I bought was ill-suited for the conditions around me. All that to say...it totally depends on the location and driving you'll be doing. One thing to keep in mind: a 2WD Tacoma will still go more places than 90% of the vehicles on the road as long as there's not snow. If you're in a place that sees a lot of snow get 4WD no matter what.

So, you need to decide a few things -

    1. Is 4x4 important to you? If it is a 4x4 truck is more capable then an "Off Road" version of a 2 wheel drive truck.

So now you need to decided between the SR5 and the TRD OR 4x4. If the TRD 4x4 is out of your price range then it should be an easy decision. If you can make it work I would consider the following:

    2. How important is the locking rear diff?
    3. Do you want the upgraded suspension and Tires that the TRD OR 4x4 comes with?
    4. Would you keep the suspension and tires?

If you don't need the rear locker and are planning on getting an aftermarket suspension and different tires then the SR5 makes sense. If you want something that you don't need to put money into after you purchase it and is pretty capable go with the TRD OR 4x4.

One thing I don't understand. Why would Toyota make a TRD OR in 4x2.
