Yep sounds like the J shifter. Thats a good setup to have, not as straightforward as a manual hub swap but easier than dealing with the wiring on a push button setup. My truck has the transfer case lever with the push button on it for 4hi, the parts truck you're describing has a j shifter that you manually shift into 4hi

Yeah, my mistake. Then it’s a J-Shift Transfer case with vacuum ADD. You’ll have to do wiring for the vacuum actuator and vacuum switching valve. I can’t help you with that, I’ve never seen anyone do it before. People usually use the electronic ADD actuator found on 2001-2004 trucks. It’s a lot simpler than wiring up the VSV’s

the VSV shouldnt be too bad to wire... i'd have to do some digging but id imagine just plug vacuum to the VSV and run signal wires to turn them on and off?

or just get a Electronic ADD actuator and wire it up.

Yeah but you have to worry about running vacuum lines too. I’d much prefer just to run wiring.

vaccum lines are easy.. he has a truck that is a template on how to run them
    but wires are easy too

Are there any mechanical drawbacks to having a VSV setup that I should be concerned with? ...reliability and longevity wise.

I guess the rubber hoses technically could rot before any wiring issues could happen

Sift through my thread in my signature.
Wasn't the best written thread, but there might be something you find useful.

Here are some pictures that I snapped really fast. There are quite a few leaks here and there that I have noticed already. This is fine because I planned to replace all of the seals that I could get to in the process of swapping the parts. Would you guys look the pictures over and tell me if you're seeing any red flags? I apologize that the pictures aren't fantastic.

As mentioned earlier in this thread, I would love to use the rear end out of this truck. It has a locker and my truck does not. Gearing is 4.10 just like mine.

It really is. It's almost a shame to start ripping its guts out! It'll make a solid little 2WD truck here soon though. I might be one of the first people on here to pull off a pre-runner to 4WD swap and a 4WD to Pre-runner swap at the same time.... or at all for that matter.

The truck ran pretty well on the hour drive to my house earlier. The steering rack bushings are completely shot so it pulled pretty hard on the interstate, but otherwise it was a pretty good drive.

Got a big ass winch on the front of it...12k is a bit overkill for a 1st gen lol. Looks like a good parts truck though

Does anyone know where I can find some information on how to power the VSV for the ADD system? I pulled the valves, vacuum hoses, and canister from the 99 today and mounted them in my truck. I do not think my wiring harness has pre-existing plugs to power the VSV solenoids.

I'm considering stripping the 99 wiring harness for the wires and plugs but really don't want to make a mess of the donor harness.... bc I have no idea how deep that rabbit hole would go.

For swaps, many opt for the later electric style ADD.

If its cheap and simple to go the electric route I totally will. I have every part I would need for the vacuum option already though(outside of my truck being pre-wired for it). I don't really like the idea of having that vacuum canister in the front wheel well anyway.

edit: @Kwikvette I shot you a PM reply a couple of hours ago. Let me know what you think.

if you can find a electric ADD actuator i can get you the diagrams. if not you can wire the VSVs up pretty simply. but you will not have it act factory/
