My last 4x4 was manual hubs and I'm new the automatic stuff and how Toyota does is it. I read the confusing manual and other posts and I think I have a good idea of how it works. I have a few questions as to when to use some modes and have made some assumptions so please excuse my ignorance and correct me where I am wrong. I have the TRDOR.

    Assumptions:

Toyota's differentials are open diff and they use the ABS to obtain limited slip

2WD mode - 1 push of traction control turns off engine breaking. Does this also apply increased breaking to the faster wheel as opposed to traction off? I could see using this on a boat ramp, otherwise if slipping why not just use 4Hi?

2WD mode - 3 second push of traction. Assume this places both diffs in open diff and turns off engine breaking. When would this ever be used?

4HI mode - 1 push of traction control turns off engine breaking. Once again does this apply increased breaking to the faster wheel as opposed to traction off and does it apply to front and rear wheels or do the front wheels remain in open diff?

4HI mode - 3 second push of traction. Assume this places both diffs in open diff and turns off engine breaking. When would this ever be used?

4LO mode - Both diffs are in open diff. Why do this, if in 4LO I am assuming you want max traction? Do they do this for steering control?

4LO mode - I assume MTS places the diffs back in limited slip mode. Does this apply to front and rear diff? Does the far left position (Mud, Sand) apply the most amount of breaking or the least amount of breaking to the faster wheel?

Locked diff and Crawl - self explanatory

Once again just trying to understand and any clarification would be great.

My main 2 questions are, 1. in 4HI what does a single push of the traction button do and in 4Lo does the MTS button perform the same function as the old A-Trak mode.

I believe in 4hi, it just turns off the engine brake/limiter. That's it. I don't have mts, but I think you're right, it just uses different logic based on the terrain selected. Sort of like atrac, but with different settings. I also don't get the press and hold for 3 seconds in 2hi. It's just open diff with no trac or vsc, which seems like would only be good for donuts...but you still have an open diff.

Yea, that would make more sense. All I get in 4hi is "trac off". Press and hold for trac off and vsc off.

Rock Lobster, ATRAC with volume control is a good way to put it. Manual is confusing because it says all the way left (mud position is high slip). Not sure if they mean mud is slippery so it applies more breaking to spinning wheel or if it allows more slip to the spinning wheel.

Manual is also not real clear on the single push of traction button in 4Hi. That is why I am confused.

This is the most appropriate place I've found to post this. In 2wd sometimes when turning trac of (push not hold) it'll show this...

    Screenshot_2016-02-07-17-46-18.jpg

And sometimes only auto lsd shows...

Oh I'll have to check that out. So over 30+ alsd will stay on but vsc will come back?

Yes. It's about 50km/h when it turns back on. But even when it says it's off, it really isn't. I'm not sure why the light even comes on, vsc is still on, and pretty aggressive really. I use it all the time in the snow and it doesn't let the truck get very sideways before it starts making a lot of grinding and popping noises.
