Put the truck into 4x4 for the first time yesterday (for an extended period of time)…I tried the 4x4 for about 30 feet at the dealership before I bought it. But yesterday I actually used it in the heavy rain we had up hear in the NE. I never made any sharp turns, and went mostly straight at about 30-50 MPH. After about 5 mins I noticed what was almost like an electric burning smell? It went away after a while. Was it the clutch?

    A few bolts are different.
key there is "for an extended period of time" and first time in 4x4 for that period. all that happened was the gear oil got warm and some came out of the overflow/diff breather.

edit: man I cant type this morning, had to edit up there.

to add, a little of that overflowed gear oil most likely got on your exhaust (the front diff breather is kinda close) and that was your burning smell.

also take a look at the driver side frame rail below and a little back of the UCA. you may be able to see remnants of the overflowed gear oil.

What should I be looking for when checking the 4wd ecu? and what is it?

I also did the rear diff breather mod....but that does not have anything to do with the front diff and 4wd right?

correct, check out under the driver side front fender first, if you see some gear oil you know right off about what happened.

The dealer I got mine from said you should use 4x4 at least 10 miles a month to keep the parts lubed properly. Just an FYI.

I never had this smell at all in my 09. It goes into 4wd quite often.
