I sat staring at the reply box for about 30 seconds, trying to decide whether or not to continue alerting people who are wrong that they are wrong, and then explain to them, piece by piece, why their extraneous, unrelated comments don't matter.

I have decided against it. Think what you want.

If they can work the brakes correctly, Yes. I out climbed a guy in my first gen (at the time open front/rear), and the other guy was in a rear locked Dakota.

You're missing the damn point still. It's forest-for-the-trees syndrome. Having a few features at my disposal did not automatically make my vehicle more capable. And people shouting opinions need to stop thinking it does.

You can always build or buy a "better" rig. Won't get you any further without the skill to use it.

Whether or not Larry would call himself an awesome driver is something you'd have to ask him. I'm comfortable saying he's more capable than I am. I'm working on catching up fast.

    *rubs temples*

A skilled driver can put a more capable vehicle to use and leverage it's additional capabilities.

An unskilled driver that does not know how to leverage these additional capabilities is wasting a capable vehicle.

    Has this concept registered yet?

    I'm going to bed...

You can't go wrong with either package really. Heck, you don't even need 4WD. Prerunners go offroading. Maybe just get the one you like the looks of?

Recommended, as I don't tell people what they can drive.

As it was, one vehicle came that had no locker or A-TRAC (the 4Runner) and of course he was helpless in the bog... but HB Murphy pulled him through it.

    3 Tacomas (2 with A-TRAC + 1 with front and rear lockers, & 1 with both)
    1 4Runner (open diffs.)
    1 Dakota (rear locker)
    1 4WD Van/Motorhome (front and rear lockers)

As you may know the '03 Tacoma with the camper blew the ring gear in the rear diff... and he had to be pulled out of the mission canyon.

See the epic trip photos in the link below...

Problem here is the assumption that ATRAC makes vehicle more capable.
With exception of dry rocks, it does not.
Actually I can safely say that ATRAC makes vehicle less capable in most of cases.
Anytime there is not enough traction on all four wheels ATRAC is not capable of figuring what to do. It never was design to do it.

Says the man with a 2007 Tacoma...

I have been four wheeling since the 60's and in my own Jeep or other vehicles since the 70's. I am also on my third Tacoma 4WD Off Road and the first one with Trac and A-TRAC. The vehicle in far more able and superior than anything before it I have driven. On Saturday, it had its second icy mud road and snow test... it never slipped... I even pulled a Ranger up a slimey hill that it couldn't make... and it was nearly too easy... Please wait to you actually have an A-TRAC Toyota before you say things about it based on observing other people or what you think. Or at least add the word "OPINION" when you post this stuff on A-TRAC.

    Thank you...

People who learn to wheel with open diffs are gonna be better offroaders in the future. When you buy an locked rig it makes you able to drive over obstacles with no skill thus no learning curve. The reason to add lockers is to go on harder and harder trails. You just ain't gonna climb 4' waterfalls in an open rig. Half of the fun of wheelin is the challenge. Driving around with A-TRAC thinking ur a tank and can't get stuck just doesn't seem fun.

I agree, my response was to someone that replied to the oP stating "if you want to do some off roading" you really need a OR and I disagreed.
