I appreciate everyone jumping in here with their knowledge and experience. This may have gone a bit OT but it certainly cleeared up some questions I had. :)

Performance is driver dependent. Always. No matter which vehicle they're in. In the very example you described above, who will win depends entirely upon the skill levels of both drivers.

The. Driver. Is always the determining factor. Always. One can turn in a better performance in a better vehicle...only if they have the skill to do so.

You should try it... Just having a capable truck that gets you where you want to go because of the technology plus driving skills makes it fun.

He probably bought a donkey and beat you all to the top of the hill.

We've now established that Geo Metros are faster than F1 cars, lockers are worthless, ATRAC was developed by Toyota to make the vehicle less capable for a premium price, and Larry is the reigning king of the offroad world.

I swear I put milk in my cereal this morning and not the white russian, but I'm having doubts.

    How skilled is each pro?

Another way to phrase it would be:

Put a stock Jeep Rubi, locked all the way around, and a stock TRD OR with its tools on the same trail. Neither one is being driven. Which one completes more obstacles?

Neither, because vehicles without drivers have no innate capability. Only when you add the operator are they able to do anything at all.

No specific model of vehicle is "better" for something until you know who's operating.

Yeah, sorry about all that. Now you know why I hate fucking California.

I still don't know where the driver vs vehicle debate is headed. This is probably a bad idea, but I'm going to take my own stab:

Take that Jeep Rubi, the TRD OR, and put a driver in each. The drivers are of equal moderate skill, and cannot communicate with each other under strict rules that we will castrate them.
We get a third driver. This mythical driver has had race track experience, is an offroad champion, and wrestles sharks on the weekend. He gets his choice of the Geo, Porsche, or F1.
All drivers are placed at the trailhead of a difficult offroad course and forced to start driving (castration threats makes people do things). At the end of the day, the Jeep and the Taco are probably going to make it with varying results. I guarantee the third driver is on fire or asked if the procedure is performed by a licensed doctor.

The next day we get all new vehicles and try again. This time, our drivers are idiots of equal idiocy. In fact, they are all clones of some other idiot. At the end of the day, all the vehicles are on fire, including the vehicles not driven, some of the spectators are crushed, and we've made an epic thread on TW.

A capable vehicle is always more capable than an incapable vehicle. There is a point when it becomes less clear cut as we add in more variables.
A good driver is always better than a less experienced driver. There is a point when a good driver can't overcome a bad car.

personally i was between the SR5 and the o/r I chose the o/r because i wanted the locker. imho the trd sport is a waste of money you can get a sr5 and basically make it a sport easy enough, adding a rear locker is a bit more difficult. i guess it comes down to personal preference and what you plan to use the truck for. None are a "bad" choice really as long as it's a tacoma you made a good choice

It's only money. The install is a fairly straightforward process if you have the know-how.

    This:

Actually, the real point that's notable is that you had to eliminate driver differences for the vehicle to matter. Which is what I've been saying all along. So, thanks, I guess.

    lol?

How much would could a wood chuck chuck if a wood chuck could chuck wood?

You still don't make much sense. No matter the experience of the driver, the vehicle can only do so much for you.

It appears at one point in time the OP w/ 2 posts made a mistake & posted his question under the wrong subform.
The "situation" has now been resolved by Chris4x4 :woot:

OT, I would buy a non-trd model but with the SR5 & tow pkgs and 4WD.
Those are my must haves though I like the TRD pkgs, I find I do not need them so opted to save the $ for my other hobbies.

The upgraded features and capabilities of the TRD models are great if it something you need, figure out your must haves. Thats my 2 cents.

Maybe my answer will be different in the next Gen tacoma....:)

People who watch Top gear, will often see the Stig challenge the other 3 in a race. The others useually have decent vehicles, where as the Stig has a "so-so" vehicle. I have never seen the Stig get beat by them.

I haven't watched much TG yet, but I'm guessing the Stig never won a boat race with a car.

Performance wise, they are better than what the Stig gets.
