The TRD (for years) meant OFF ROAD only... then with the 2nd Gen. they created the SPORT TRD to cater to the street racer kids who like hood scoops (working or not didn't matter)... The problem is they (salesmen) lie or don't bother to tell buyers that there are serious mechanical advantages to the Off Road's traction controls and the hydraulic brake booster... The result is a lot more SPORT sales than there would be, as we can witness from posts above... as well as a lot of ANGER and HOSTILITY by SPORT owners who discovered later they were mis-lead or uninformed... Hey to a lot of folks the scoop looks cool.

When I shoped for my '05 truck, they sat me in a SPORT... said that the locking rear diff. was no longer available ... replaced with the limited slip diff. I discovered the lie before changing brands!

    You don't want to know...

Thanks to you David and your amazing description of A-Trac and such, I traded in the pre-runner for a 2011 Off Road today!

Its kinda mixture of  with a :D type feeling.

I can't wait to try it all out though!

    Thanks for the push :)

I'm not hostile at all . Why won't you accept that the Offroad is not the ideal configuration for all owners ?

Interesting Thread. It seems that the Sport vs Offroad argument is similar to the 4wd vs Prerunner argument.

You always have the prerunner folks saying its all in the driver and my 2wd can go anyplace your 4wd can bla bla bla

BUT it cant. Just like the sport folks can not go everyplace an offroad can.

All things being equal a 4wd will go places a 2wd wont and a offroad will go places a sport wont its just how it is. Wish all you want, click your heels and hold your breath it wont change a thing.

Now mix in all kinds of modification and different skill levels of drivers and different terrains you get different outcomes but its a bit ludicrous to compare a bone stock offroad with a sport with 35 inch tires lockers front and rear supercharger winch parachute, levitation tank tracks etc..

So lets not get to crazy here. An offroad is better than a sport its just how it is. No need to be cranky about it just go buy your new rims, new tires, air compressor, new lockers, re-gear upgrade your suspension go to offroad driving school and you will go anyplace an offroad will. High five see you at the top.

The Offroad is configured to offroad , so obviously is better suited to offroading .

Offroading is not the primary use for all Tacoma owners , so the Offroad is not the BEST configuration for all owners .

SR5 and Sport owners were not " all mislead , uninformed , hostile and bitter " as David would have us all believe , there are different reasons that people buy these trucks .

I'm also pretty sure that most Sport drivers don't consider themselves " steet racer kids " as David put it .

I don't agree at all...I have yet to find a place that my sport wouldn't get to...I'm sure they exist but IDK where they are. I've also gotten farther down trails than a number of different vehicles (Heeps, FJs, 4 Runners) with my Sport.

This. I got a Sport cause my wife likes how it looked. I got a 4x4 cause I wanted it. And I wheeled the shit out of it for a good two years before I moved.
