 Hay guys, great forum, have to say that I am a bit new to this but really appreciate the advice. Last week while incorrectly engaging into 4h in my 2006 off road, after getting stuck in my gravel driveway while backing up to my trailer " and turning", I heard a clunk and now when driving in the snow in 4h under load, it sounds like my driver front cv axle has turned into a jackhammer. Thank god for the differential lock feature or I would still be stuck in the snow below the high tide line on the beach. Before ripping into everything, I would love some advice. It sounds like sound is on stock driver side front, cv axle, but crawling underneath feels like the 6month old aftermarket passenger side front cv axle has front to back and rotational play, and the driver side is tight like a tiger. Also, I have had that bearing groaning happening for quite some time that gets louder when taking off ramps. Any suggestions on the right parts to get before I rip her apart? Thanks soo much, you guys rock

Does the sound disappear in 2H?

How much play is in the front passenger CV?

BTW, aftermarket CVs have less travel than Toyota CVs, so turning at max suspension flex can destroy the CV pretty quickly.

The jack hammer sound disappears in 2h and 4h when not under load. I would say there is 3/8 play in and out and 5 deg rotation on passenger side, the boot is a little twisted but still in tact. Do you suggest biting the $400.00 bullet and buy the OEM this time? As we all know this is not the easiest job, wish I did not cheap out the first time. What about the wheel bearing? Oem also?

Talk to your dealer's service dept and see if they can rebuild the CV axle. When my previous car got a torn boot and damaged CV joint, the dealer sent it out to be rebuilt for $200.

Darn, orig axle went back as core, that would have been a good savings.
