Absolutely. But a lot of snow to me is not 30 heavy snow days in six months. It's more like 6"+ of snow every week. A few snow days does not warrant the added expense for a 4WD for me. Most of the time the raods are cleared salted and sanded, within hours enough for cars to ride safely.

Most trucks do not have be in in 4WD to get around where a car can.
On ICE no vehicle has an advantage except the one with chains.

Where there is snow there is ice......A 35-40 degree day turns into black ice at night. Melt runoff freezes. most of the vehicles in the run off ditches are people who forget that. many of them are still in 4WD.

OP, 4wd is better and safer for snow. It's just the simple fact of the matter. The thing to remember is that 4wd doesn't make you invinsible--that attitude is what'll get you in trouble.

The reason I have a PreRunner is because I live in New Mexico--a desert. We get no more then 3 snow days a year, and I don't really have a use for 4wd (to justify the cost, anyway). I can go through 3 foot mud puddles, sand, and my locker has gotten me out of trouble every time. Snow and ice are just different stories.

    Oh and...:deadhorse: :D

I drive on the highway in 4wd when it is covered in snow...have you ever driven in snow before? 2wd trucks are probably the worst vehicles to being driving around in snowy conditions. Can it be done? Yes, it can, depending on how much snow there is, the tires and how fast they are going. I put my rear locker on in 2wd in snowy conditions to do donuts not to give me better traction when I'm driving around town or on the freeway in snow.

well a 2wd will do even worse then... atleast get the 4wd to deal with the snow side

the only reason "most" of them in the ditch are 4wd is because the 2wd couldn't get out of their driveways.

That's retarded . You're saying you can get around in 2WD , but I will go off the road because I have it in 4x4 and will probably ' forget ' that water freezes at night ?

If you live somewhere that gets a lot of snow you have two options

    get a 2wd truck and...
    a shovel
    lots of sandbags
    chains
    recovery straps
and a friend with a 4x4 to pull you out

    or get a 4x4

my work mate has a 2wd dakota with snow tires and he hates winter, I have fun pulling him out of construction sites, his driveway and even the ski hill parking lot during heavy snow or when it gets icy

I have driven with a 2WD in the same conditions where AWD and 4WDs are in runoff ditches. You tell me.

It has been my observation that people (especially young people) believe they are invincible because they have 4WD. Absolutely.

I lived in Vegas when a kid killed himself on a city street in a lifted 4WD Taco going 60 and decided to push though a puddle of water with one side of his invincible 4WD and flipped it. Someone forgot to tell him water is like a wall when you hit it and it will stop one side of the vehicle allowing the other to proceed with dire result on a vehicle with a very high center of gravity. A lower vehicle would have spunout.

wtf man... you are dense, this has nothing to do with it being 4wd or 2wd this has everything to do with idiot drivers... I have 4wd and I've never driven into a ditch... unintentionally

A 4WD will always have better traction than a 2wd... additionally it snows about 50% of the year in Tahoe!
